The Great Barrier Reef off the east cost of Australia is one of the 7 natural wonders of the world. It is home to more than 1,500 species of fish, 6 species of turtles, and more than 30 species of marine mammals (WWF, feb 2015).

Due to human activity the reef has become more and more polluted in the last few decades, and scientists say a lot of the coral has died and will not likely recover.
Plastic pollution is always a big issue, and not only on the Great Barrier Reef. It kills marine life every day, and has a huge impact on their habitats and health.

A reminder to recycle, reuse and donate so that we can make an effort for the planet we live on and share with so many other species. 🌍🌱🌞

Here are some pictures of what we’ve found walking in the area. Some of these are surprisingly well hidden and can be left to contaminate the nature for decades or centuries.

A tip to those who want to help; when on a walk, pick up all the pieces you find and make sure they are recycled and put where they belong ☺️✨
Maybe picking up rubbish can be fun too, for example by playing a game where you have to find a piece of rubbish of every colour in the rainbow before you can go home for the day!

Your small effort is greatly bettering the planet and making it a safe place for all of the species that inhabit it 🌎

This table of decomposition rate of plastic products is taken from the WWF website and shows how long it takes for the items to break down once used and thrown away.
Only about 12% of plastic is recycled according to National Geographic, which means the remaining plastic ends up in nature- most of the time in the ocean.
This has to stop in order to save the species on the planet that are affected by this.
