This past Sunday was Pentecost, which means we have entered a new season in the church calendar, and LECTIONARY POETRY, VOLUME 2 is available for you now!

From the introduction:

"The infiltration of technology, climate change, and unregulated capitalism lead to an accelerated pace of life; a disconnect from the seasons and the creation of which we are a part; and unchecked, exploitative consumerism. Into this environment, the church calendar and lectionary paridoxically provide both structure and freedom. They invite us to slow down, to acknowledge our place as creatures with the passage of time, and to connect with the grand narrative God is writing."

If you are someone who observes the church calendar, or if you are someone who is simply looking to add some freshness and depth to your personal devotional practices this summer and fall, consider picking up a copy of this ebook!

This ebook covers Pentecost and Ordinary Time, and it includes 2 classic and 2 contemporary poems to correspond with each scripture reading in the Revised Common Lectionary.

The book is available from Amazon, Bookshop, Apple, and all the places you normally purchase ebooks! You can also purchase directly from us and support our work here at The Englewood Review of Books and Englewood Press! by @erbooks

This week's feature review:

Frequent ERB contributor and podcast host, Joel Wentz, reviews CHOSEN LAND: HOW CHRISTIANITY MADE AMERICA AND AMERICANS REMADE CHRISTIANITY by Matthew Avery Sutton

As always, find the full review at our website.

Here's an excerpt:

Matthew Avery Sutton, in his sweeping new book Chosen Land, aims to provide this sort of historical accounting of American Christianity, focusing on the dynamic nature of American culture itself, the way Christian expressions have evolved and iterated within that culture, and how Christianity has been an indelible force in the story of the American people from the pre-colonial era through the present day. In fact, it is Sutton’s focus on this dialectical dynamism that separates Chosen Land from many otherwise similar one-volume works on American history. If Sutton set out to demonstrate that the story of America cannot be recounted without sensitivity to Christianity, then he succeeded, and this is largely due to the impressive scope of his research and synthesis.

The scope of Sutton’s work is both wide, beginning in the start of the colonial era and capturing the chronology of the American story, and deep, representing a full array of Christian leaders, expressions, and institutions from each era. While no historical work can be truly exhaustive (and I will comment below on some of the gaps), this book must first be commended for the sheer breadth of material it uses, including primary sources throughout. As a reader with an interest in research, I was particularly delighted by Sutton’s annotated bibliographies for every chapter, pointing the reader to a treasure trove of important material relating to every stage of American recorded history. by @erbooks

We're happy to share an excerpt of the book WHAT HATH JUSTICE TO DO WITH RIGHTEOUSNESS? by Charlie E. Dates. Head to the ERB to read and consider if this book is one you'd like to add to your TBR!

From the excerpt:

"Righteousness and justice are two interdependent yet inseparable ideas in the heart, mind, and revelation of God in the Scripture. Like Table Mountain in South Africa, the pillars of righteousness and justice rise with unshakable authority, gazing down on the decisions of humankind. They are not merely good, admirable ideas; they are foundational to the mind and revelation of God. Our preaching of the gospel is directionless without them. Our coursework in the Christian academy, however rigorous, loses its edge outside of these. Our practice in the public square forfeits our credibility without them. However intellectual, moral, or devout we claim to be, these pillars expose our assertions and test the integrity of our doctrines." by @erbooks
