šŸ Prush nën hirin e ri (Embers beneath new ashes) (2025) is a photographic series that amalgamates realism and dystopia to uncover the aftermath of Albania’s recent history. Erdiola Kanda Mustafa’s series takes place in Kombinati Metalurgjik, a huge iron and steel factory in Elbasan, the artist’s ā€˜city town’. It was the most ambitious industrial project undertaken during the dictatorship of Enver Hoxha (1944-1985), located in the centre of the country.

In this series, the now-abandoned building reincarnates as a sort of social container of both the memories and effects of a shattered illusion, and embodies the collective visual memory promoted of communist propaganda. The medium of photography here presents itself as a record, a cultural repository—and a trace of absence.

Pasqyra e Lëndësh by @erdiola_kanda explores exile as something that does not end when a person leaves a country. The long-term project brings together analog photography, archives, oral histories, rituals, landscapes, video, sound, and writing to examine how displacement survives through family stories and inherited memory. Rather than resolving these fragments into a clear narrative, Mustafaj keeps absence and uncertainty visible, allowing the work to remain as unstable as memory itself.

In our interview, Mustafaj explains how the project grew from returning to Albania and finding it both familiar and foreign. We discuss why she rejects photographs that explain too much, how she sequences images through tension rather than chronology, why fragile materials became part of the work, and how moving between Albania, Italy, and France changed her understanding of exile from a single rupture into something that can repeat across generations.

What if home stops being a place and becomes something you carry? That question sits underneath the whole project.

Double language 9ā€50 Video and Sound (Reel), 2025
Exhibited at Art Explora Ɨ Vila 31 residency, Tirana
-
Some things are carried in the body long before they are understood. The memory of a land left behind, a dialect passed down in whispers, a dance that once defied oppression — Double Language gathers these inheritances tenderly, tracing what survives across generations of exile. A work about longing, language, and the gestures we inherit from those who came before us.

La mostra eĢ€ visitabile fino all’11 settembre. Non mancate!
