Round Mull Race 2026

My first yacht race and only my second time crewing (my intro was crewing Misty at the lochaber_yacht_club Regatta the weekend before!)

Just three of us on Misty with Viola and Michael meant we were a little short handed but we were delighted to come away with a first on day one and a third in class overall against some really strong competition.

The conditions where just exactly challenging enough, especially on the second day beating into Bunessan in a force 7 well reefed.

A brilliant experience and it's definitely lit the fire for more. What a thrill!

Thanks so much Viola & Michael for having me along and keeping me right! taken in Isle of Mull by @erhardtz

Do you ever take a photo and just think "yes" ? This shot did that for me haha. I think there's something deep there in the colours, the geometry, the feeling and texture and the sense of pondering wonder. A vibe, as they say. Pleased. 😊 taken in Malta by @erhardtz

A bonnie Scottish mountain adventure! Navigating endless peat bogs and searching for "well defined" paths took us to the ruins at Fedden and then up to the bealach between Sron a Choire Ghairbh and Meall Dubh before dropping down along along the side of Allt Glas Dhoire for some of the best single track descent I think I've ever ridden! Top day out, easily worth 5 hours of wet feet and a whole packet of henry hippos 🚲 ⛰️ 🗺️ taken in Scottish Highlands by @erhardtz

I’ve spent the last week lying on the ground, getting covered in rust and grease, and intermittently burning myself with weld spatter.

Somewhere in there I’ve been doing a bit of existential… wondering.

I suppose the question I was circling was: Why?

Why am I doing this?

Why work so hard on things other people might say are broken? Or won’t work? Or can’t be done?

I can see the appeal of taking the easy road. Going with what already works. Letting things go sooner. Stopping when something feels tough. Saying “that’s just too much work” or “it’s not worth it” and moving on.

That’s pretty tempting sometimes.

I’m not sure if it’s nature or nurture, or whether life really works the way I hope it does: that if you work hard, and keep working, you’ll be rewarded in the end. Perhaps the journey itself is the reward. Or maybe we always have to keep choosing what’s worth the effort.

Anyway, here I am, lightly singed, four arches and a bunch of suspension parts later, incredibly grateful for the friends who came to lend me a hand, let me use their tools, or gave me space to work. You’re the best!

If action expresses priority, I suppose that shows which side of the coin I’m on with this, at least. It’s not beautiful, but it’s solid. It’s mine. And I know it far better than I would have if I’d spent a lot more on one that was ready to go.

Just a few more bits and bobs and the Landy will be ready for the coasteering season, I hope.

It’s a funny old business, exploring the line between giving things your all and working too hard. And how do you even begin to know where that effort is best spent?

Do you think we get out what we put in? Or do you think I’d be better off putting the welder away and going for an ice cream?

Answers on a postcard please, dear reader. taken in Scottish Highlands by @erhardtz

A fun few days exploring historical sites and getting a bit of sun with @mh95_workshop.

Although I was doing a bit of showing around, WW2 history is very much Martyn's thing, so I got to learn a fair bit along the way too.

Thanks for humouring me when I talked us into afternoon tea at Inverlochy Castle Hotel (which is properly fancy), even though we were both fairly out of place in our shorts amongst the posh people! A pleasant chance to revisit my niche hobby of taking friends for high tea in inappropriate getups, after doing much the same with the boys in their leathers at Invergarry Castle Hotel on our motorcycle trip round the NC500.

Thanks to @eilidhcameronsykes for joining us for an evening and sharing her local knowledge too, which I’m fairly sure is unsurpassed! taken in Scottish Highlands by @erhardtz

I recently started a new project with an old friend @erhardtz and our first shoot in The Canary Islands was usurpingly chaotic, maddening and quite fun. The idea was to explore new places with an adventurous spirit and a local guide. We had the lively @stickandstone_travel leading the way and I’ll edit a longer video at some point. taken in Gran Canaria, Canary Islands - Spain by @erhardtz

The Skippinish Oak 🌿
Safely hidden in a spruce plantation
Thought to be somewhere between 400 and 1000 years old
There are whispers of it being the resting place of a Clan Cameron chief
Rare black-eyed Susan lichen grows on it's trunk
The tree was first shown to experts in 2009 by Andrew Stevenson from Skippinish who had known the tree since childhood

Learning about sticky plant sap used for all manner of things, channeling my inner Nigel Thornberry as a presenter, seeing La Fortaleza and ancient cave paintings and eating cactus figs without touching the outside. A whistle stop tour and so much fun! 🏝️ taken in Gran Canaria, Canary Islands - Spain by @erhardtz
