Tonight, I have the privilege of being in conversation with my boss, friend and mentor, Faheem Majeed (@faheemmajeedstudio ), and my fellow “Surviving the Long Wars” artists, Aaron Hughes (@aarhughes ), Brittney Chantele (@brittneychantele ), and Dorothy Burge (@dburge1932 ).

We will be discussing our work and dive into the themes of the essays collected in our book, “Surviving the Long Wars: Creative Rebellion at the Ends of Empire”.

I am lucky to have my work included in the publication as a National Endowment for the Humanities Veteran Fellow but also to have helped photograph some of the incredible work by artists I admire in the book.

Currently reading my advanced copy of the Surviving The Long Wars book and I’m moved to tears by the essays, poems, and artworks contained within. It is such an honor to have been invited to be an NEH Veteran Fellow, exhibit new works alongside such talented artists, and then help contribute to this important book with some documentation photos of all three STLW exhibitions.

For this exhibition, I started a series of collaborative portraits with the men I deployed with during my time in the United States Marine Corps. It has been an opportunity to reconnect with these men, get a broader understanding of their experiences in survival and fill in the gaps of who they were before I knew them and who they are now. It is a series that I have been lucky enough to continue this year with 3 new portraits of veterans from Seattle, New York City, and Kansas City.

This Sunday, December 8th from 3pm-4:30pm, the emerging Veterans Art Movement (@veteran_art_movement ) is hosting the official Surviving The Long Wars Book Release and closing for our last exhibition, Transformative Threads, at the Chicago Cultural Center (Grand Army of the Republic Hall). Join Urban Growers Collective in installing a beautiful rye maze on our South Chicago farm! Installed and led by the Art Institute of Chicago, The Maze (2011-2013) is a grass maze created by Moataz Nasr in various public spaces in and outside Europe.

Volunteers will be needed on multiple days to assist with laying down wood chips to create distinct paths throughout the maze.

Please come prepared in close-toed shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty.

This project will take place across multiple days - you are welcome to sign up for more than one shift. We hope to see you there!!

This Saturday, December 9th, is our final Center Days as residents at the Hyde Park Art Center! Come by for the final Open Studios of the year and see all the amazing work my fellow Radical Resident Artists cohort have been up to.

I am beyond excited to see my dear friend's, Dennissa Young, new piece, "Mutual Agreements".

Candace Hunter's "The Alien-Nations and Sovereign States of Octavia E. Butler" is a spectacular tribute to the late science-fiction author.

For the last few months, I have been working as Project Manager for the Chicago Architecture Biennial’s city-partner sites. I’ve been working with local, national, and international artists on installations throughout the Chicagoland area, partnering with many community organizations I’ve been lucky to work with before.

Today, CAB5 unveiled its first activations, with many more highlights planned each week leading up to the city-wide opening on November 1st.

Although the work is far from over, I wanted to take a moment to celebrate both the Floating Museum and Chicago Architecture Biennial teams on this special occasion.

Today is the last day to catch Surviving the Long Wars: Unlikely Entanglements at the Hyde Park Art Center. It has been an incredible honor to be a part of such an important show and to be in conversation with some of the most generous, compassionate, and thoughtful artists, curators, and organizers I have ever had the pleasure of working with.
