After a 16-year-old Central Park horse named Deniz died suddenly in June, the Park's carriage horse drivers began suspecting it was due to eating Japanese Yew, which is common all over the Park.⁠

Simultaneously, carriage drivers in Central Park have been increasingly accused of abusing their horses, and many accused Deniz's driver of mortally overworking him.⁠

Deniz's owner has filed a notice of claim against New York City and the Central Park Conservancy demanding toxic plant inspections, warnings, and removals to protect horses, wildlife, and children.⁠

The daredevils who scaled the top of the Empire State Building were back in courtroom in Lower Manhattan on Monday.

Ivan Kuznetsov, 32, and Angela Nikolau, 33, did not have anything to say after their appearance... but they did turn on the charm for the cameras.

The two face charges including reckless endangerment, burglary and criminal mischief. They are due back in court next month. by @ericabyfield

An overturned tanker truck spilled thousands of gallons of fuel onto a Queens roadway, according to officials, shutting down a major thoroughfare leading to JFK Airport.

The tanker overturned just before 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Rockaway Turnpike and East Avenue near the Meadowmere neighborhood, the FDNY said. Security video obtained by NBC New York showed the truck making a left turn and tipping over onto its side in the process.

A large emergency response from fire and EMS personnel rushed to the scene, spraying foam on the ground and around the crash site to deal with any possible spilled fuel. by @ericabyfield

Luigi Mangione's state murder trial has been delayed as prosecutors respond to a defense motion seeking to dismiss the case on double jeopardy grounds.⁠
⁠
Mangione pleaded guilty Friday in federal court to stalking charges and admitted to fatally shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Manhattan on Dec. 4, 2024. His attorneys argue that New York's double jeopardy laws mean he should not face a separate state prosecution for the same conduct.⁠
⁠
A judge has ordered prosecutors to respond by Oct. 9, with the next state court appearance scheduled for Dec. 10.⁠

“Start spreading the news,” Mayor Zohran Mamdani whisper sang Thursday while announcing a new lottery program to help high school students see Broadway shows for free.

The lottery program will distribute 2,000 free tickets to seven different shows, as part of a partnership between the City and the Theatre Development Fund.

The lottery is open through August 17, with winning students gifted up to two tickets for select Broadway shows. Students can access the lottery at on.nyc.gov/Broadway. by @ericabyfield
