25 years ago my sisters and I were sat down by my mom and told “your daddy may not be returning home tonight, or ever, so say your prayers.”
Our prayers were answered when we saw him walking down the block later that night after not being able to get in contact with him the entire day.
I am one of the lucky ones. I remember having second-hand survivors guilt when I went into school a few days after and my teacher told me that her firefighter husband died that day… but my dad had come home. I felt guilt when I heard my friends and classmates say that they were unable to find their relatives… but my dad came home. I can still now hear the pain in their voices while telling me these stories, and it breaks my heart til this day. 💔

The only good memory I have from such a tragic day was the memory of how New Yorkers treated eachother the days to follow. We actually all had each-others backs and understood each-others pain. We actually took time to look each-other in the eyes while walking past one another. We stood up for eachother. We were unified.
How we’ve strayed so far from that in 2026 in NYC (and everywhere) nowadays is beyond me. But ALAS, we persist.

I love you, dad. Im so happy you returned home. My condolences go out to all of the people that were not so fortunate, and to the first responders that courageously helped that day not knowing they were going to live their last day on earth. Tomorrow is never promised, hug your family and friends extra tight today. To all the angels, continue to rest in heavenly peace. Dear Rocky, thank you for being the sweetest and best doggy horsey puppy nephew I could ask for. Richie and I will miss watching you every summer. Although your time on earth was shorter than anyone wanted or expected, within these past 5 and a half years you’ve filled all of our lives with laughter and love that can be felt for a lifetime. I love you Rocky bean and you were put in the best family to take care of you. I hope there are no fireworks in heaven, I hope there’s all the treats you can have without guilt or pain, I hope Milo is at the gate greeting you and you can both run around and play.
