We went to Houston the day after the funeral. I packed at 5:00 a.m. and threw clothes in a suitcase, unfolded. Charles & I went to Maxwell’s apartment first. We searched for what he was doing in his final days by reading his journal and tracking his receipts. He was in a lot of pain for so much longer than we knew. Being in his space also confirmed that we would definitely need a therapist with us when we brought the kids; I decided to not go back there. While I played with my grandbaby and ordered room service, everyone else packed his things including a therapist and Chris, Maxwell’s advisor. He wanted his Math papers, which were all over the apartment. Anne wanted his yellow bike. We packed all of his art. Maxwell had wonderful clothes. He once spent $250 on an embroidered shirt. Like all mathematicians, he had tons of Hagoromo chalk. We took those home and I have kept a piece of chalk in my pocket every day since. The following days in Houston were beautiful. Chris presented Maxwell’s research at a forum. We had no idea the extent of Maxwell’s genius. They took us to Sichuan with Maxwell’s closest friends, then we met all of the math graduate students and professors. They held a memorial and once again we found that so many people loved Maxwell. We witnessed intense grief and somehow sharing it with each other felt powerful and healing. We are home now trying to live a life we don’t know how to live. We are thankful, though, for the immense love we felt at Rice. by @ericaplumm

Maxwell’s funeral lifted us in ways we thought impossible. So many people helped us put on the event. They set up the memorial tables, ushered, played music, and helped us pay for the funeral costs. And through every part of it, people were practically spoonfeeding us to keep us going. I received hundreds of hugs and there was a palpable healing from this human touch. I felt my pain lesson with each embrace. The thing that meant the most to us was that people would come listen to us talk about our Maxwell. They flew in from many places to honor him and his life—Houston, Dallas, Philadelphia, Chicago, Florida, L.A., Oakland, Madison WI, St. Louis, Seattle, Berlin, New York City, Boise—and we were humbled by the vast love for Maxwell. We have experienced incredible light amidst our heartbreak. We don’t know what the future looks like for us, but we feel like there are thousands of people who have our backs. “The Faces Who Made Me,” 2024

One of the most fulfilling parts of making “A Love Letter to My Parents” was finding my family’s archives.

There were rumors that a VHS tape of my parents’ wedding existed somewhere…and after a summer of searching, we found it in an old storage unit along with Super8 footage of my grandparents’ wedding.

Digitizing these clips and seeing myself within generations of humor, love, mannerisms, and faces is something I will never forget or take for granted. I even love being able to see Salt Lake City over the years, a place that has become increasingly tender to me lately.

My grandma passed a few months after we showed her her wedding film, and I’m infinitely grateful she got to see it.

Take care of your film! Ask your families about their archives! Love your grannies!

If you’d like to see “A Love Letter to My Parents” at the Orem Film Festival, there are still tickets available with the link in my bio. Get a seat at screen 8 if you want to see our Q&A as well. Cheers! taken in Salt Lake City, UT by @ericaplumm

The horse chestnut trees were in bloom! And the wisteria! Charles planned our daily excursions, and I followed along, everyday surprised by the most incredible places. Parisians sing Bonjour! Parisians love whimsy (unicorn mythology) cafes & beautiful shops. I ate onion soup, crescent rolls wth mascarpone & raspberry, baguettes with salted butter, and daily macarons.
Chantel and Greg met us there and they took me thrifting & pointed me to lovely clothes that I would never have the patience to search for myself. I came back with a suitcase full of treasures: prints, paper, notebooks, jewelry, and clothes. Chantel cried and cried at Sainte-Chapelle when she saw the floor to ceiling stained glass; she was moved by the beauty, scale, craftsmanship, and the community required to create something so beautiful. I turned 50 this year and this trip was a dream come true. taken in Paris by @ericaplumm

Fun Mira story: She went to see the musical Guys & Dolls at the Bridge Theater in London, and at the end of the production the cast pulled her onto the stage for curtain call and made her bow with them. Why? Because this girl whooped and hollered and cat-called so much that the rest of the audience joined in the whooping and hollering and cat-calling, and the performers absolutely loved it, and played to it, and the audience and cast connected in the magical way that every performer dreams of, and Mira never stopped the cheering so the whole audience never stopped. And the cast knew it was her doing who changed the energy of the night which is why they pulled her onto the stage at curtain call. I watched her do this same thing at the parade at Disneyland where she turned the whole street audience into a cheering wonderland and the dancers would literally come and do their twirls right in front of her. Mira knows in her bones that people love to be cheered on, and cheering on others changes the reality of the world. Happy 24th Birthday, Wonder-Girl. We are so lucky to call you ours. by @ericaplumm

Mira keeps coming back to Hawaii with me even though I’m apt to spill the entire Cafe Rio dressing on the airplane, put her contacts in my eyes, and lose all the sunglasses, hers and mine alike. Others join us along the way, but in the end it’s just me and my girl. We always get a bit of magic and this year Mira spoke to a horse and said “I’m the year of the horse” and the horse put its whole head on her shoulder and just stayed and stayed and stayed that way. Cheers to our 2026 trip and many more years of magic to come. by @ericaplumm

Two months ago we heard ambulances and then the news that my friend Shar had died. Charles & I adored her and the whole Nelson family. Ron and Shar moved in around the corner from me and has been my neighbor & dear friend for twenty years. She was 50 and I was 30 when we first built our Daybreak homes. Our boys were the same age, and she told me that she became pregnant with Curtis on-the-sly, and I don’t think Ron was ever mad but still, they both loved to tell us that it was in Shar’s sneakiness that Curt was made. Harrison was my second teenage love child, and so from the beginning Shar & I shared the intimacy of female friendship where we talked openly about the taboo or untoward. My Harrison & her Curtis were fast friends & one of my first memories of Shar was sitting together at the Daybreak elementary Halloween parade to watch our sons. All of us young mothers of that time basked in Shar’s love. We climbed into her bed (not knowing yet how sick she was) and laughed and gossiped and told stories, and she constantly told me how wonderful I am. In our new neighborhood, some mistook my big personality for being invincible, but Shar saw my insecurity & sadness & she loved me fiercely and I needed her love. Shar and Ron did what we would all eventually learn to do: love our adult children unconditionally. Our Daybreak Founder’s Park family are truly special in the way we love our own and each other’s children, and I think Shar & Ron showed us how to do this first. I never heard a hint of the disappointment that plagues parents from them. They were filled with joy and excitement about their children’s lives, so when it was our turn and it was now our kids who came out of the closet, left the church, got into and out of relationships, floundered and pounced their careers, we did what Shar & Ron had always done—radically loved our children.
