"..that looks like my signature."
"it is your signature, grandma"

This is a story I've kept under wraps with the exception of a few people. November 2023, my world turned completely upside down forever. Without warning, the news came that my sweetest angel, my Helen, was abruptly diagnosed with cancer. Metastatic, likely originating in the pancreas. Stage 4. 3-6 months. News so unexpected that even today, I'm struggling to believe is real. Suddenly the living room of our small little home was a hospital room and I became a 24/7 hospice nurse. I felt and still feel angry. No one deserves cancer, but my grandmother is the last person that deserved this. I'm saddened we didn't get to watch our Orioles win the World Series this year together. Saddened I didn't get to take her to the new Lexington Market. So many things. The sight of a clock made my heart wrench as I watched each second pass by, knowing I was one second closer to losing my girl with every tick of the hand. My heart was absolutely shattered when she would say things like "I just don't understand why I'm not getting better" when I knew there was absolutely nothing I could do to fix her. I pleaded with the universe to let me switch places with her. Within this absolutely horrible situation, though, are moments that I am forever grateful for. I am extremely grateful to have been here and allow her to pass in the comfort of her own home. I'm so happy I was able to give her one last Thanksgiving dinner. I think she enjoyed my dry ass turkey. I'm so happy I was able to give her one last Christmas. There were so many little moments I'll never forget, but definitely one of the best was when I snuck away for a few hours to get my first tattoo. My gma has always hated tattoos, but I do think she felt my love when I showed her I got her signature tattooed. "Look grandma, you're literally with me forever now." She kept repeating the word forever with the biggest smile on her face. A beautiful moment I'll never forget. I guess the moral of the story is to cherish these little moments while you can.

A post that I've never wanted to post. It is with extreme sadness to share that my best friend, my queen, my lovely, beautiful, amazing grandmother passed away yesterday. If you've met me for more than 2 minutes, you'll know that this woman meant the absolute world to me. The woman that so graciously and selflessly gave up her retirement years to raise my brother and I on her own. It's cliche to say, but without hyperbole, I would be dead or in jail without my grandmother. The only family I have ever known, the only love I have ever felt. To say that she was my rock would be an understatement. The kindest, best human being to ever walk this planet. Anyone that has been lucky enough to have crossed paths with her will agree that she is the sweetest lady they've ever met. The grief, the emptiness, and the loneliness I feel is immeasurable. Life will never be the same and I have no idea how I'm supposed to go on without you. I'm not a religious person, nor do I believe in a heaven or an afterlife, but I hope I'm wrong. I hope I get to watch Orioles games again with you in the sky, my OG Baltimore hon. You may have left us on Valentine's Day, but you'll forever be my one and true Valentine. I love you so much, baby girl. I hope I was able to show you just how much I loved you. Thank you for everything. Fuck cancer. by @ericbmore
