Just a bit of an appreciation post for the little surfing community we’ve built over the years. Nothing quite like people from all walks of life coming together for a shared love of the ocean. I brought my camera to the beach this day and got some shots I love, that really feel like they capture the spirit of surfing. Strip away the tech and spend time in the water laughing and shouting with your friends; it makes the world feel bright. taken in San Clemente, California by @ericbrunner

Some highlights from a black & white 35mm roll spanning the past year. Friends, old and new, going on adventures to places familiar and others unknown. From @phish festivals, to the depths of the New Hampshire woods, to the slot canyons of the Mojave, to the remote Sierra mountains. B&W photography has an interesting effect on how you look for photos - you can’t rely on the colors to tell the story, but need to instead focus on the light, shadows and textures. It’s a fun exercise in thinking outside of the box and forces a different type of creativity. by @ericbrunner

Riding from Bernina Pass to Poschiavo - an adventure to never be forgotten. Starting in the high alpine, we made our way down the side of the valley, following old smuggler trails through the trees and rattling our teeth out at unwise speeds over Roman cobblestone roads.

Storybooks couldn’t capture an experience more magical. Charging down a trail through the forest, your own personal roller coaster, your mind clear, sublime. Nothing else exists in that moment, you are more present and in tune with your body and environment than ever before.

At times you find yourself pulled out from the flow state, only to find yourself in a green mountain pasture surrounded by cows. Or perhaps at a beautiful lookout, the gentle wind and warm sun your main companions. The gratitude never leaves, though. It exists, behind it all, keeping you humble and awestruck.

To have that experience in the mountains, to feel so remote and removed, to push yourself down challenging trails ever faster, covering yourself in muck, water, sweat, and chocolate you forgot was in your pocket; it is an experience most would think of as uncomfortable, or unpleasant. But, finding that flow state, letting the world go, connecting with the trail in your own unique style, pushing your body to be stronger, quicker, smarter; it is a rare gift to experience.

And nothing tops it off quite like rolling into a picturesque Italian-Swiss village completely filthy, with ancient bell towers clanging, rolling up to a historic hotel with a cafe, and devouring beer and pinsa (NOT pizza, as we were strongly corrected), all while being stared at by the clean-shaven, well-dressed visitors in the town square. taken in Bernina Pass by @ericbrunner

And just like that, @transmadeira 2023 is complete! What an incredible experience put on by amazing people. You have to be a little crazy to PAY to put yourself through such a difficult and dangerous physical challenge like this race, and it’s nice to know there’s at least 140 people in the world like me willing to take it on.

Riding in Madeira is like nothing else in the world. You can start in the high alpine rain, deep in the mud, wondering if you’ll ever be dry again, then end your day in the blazing tropical sun at the beach, blasting dusty trails like you’d never seen rain before.

To the Trans Madeira crew: thank you. The immense effort and stress and logistics required to make this event what it is does not go unnoticed and I am extremely grateful for your hard work. And to the photo crew - thank you as well for chasing us around in those unforgiving conditions and taking some incredible photos!!

I am so pleased with my performance this time around. I managed to ride technical, wet, scary trails that I had to walk last year, and I was able to push and race the trails in a way that was beyond just survival riding. I’m coming home with a body completely bruised, battered and beaten, but a heart completely full. My riding has obviously improved and it was a joy to see that come to fruition here in Madeira. With a total race time over 13 minutes faster than last year, I’m beyond stoked. But, there’s still plenty of work to do and time to find out there!! Cheers, Madeira, thanks for another wild adventure. by @ericbrunner

Day two of exploring the Swiss Alps by bike. Started the morning with a pedal out the front door up to a remote alpine settlement. In the afternoon, we took a bus to Davos and a tram up to the top of Jakobshorn. What followed was one of the rowdiest descents so far, an absolutely flat out blast down a rooty, rocky, dusty track to a gorgeous village. We took a super engaging climb out of the saddle up to a traverse along the side of the valley and made our way back towards Alvaneu Dorf. After spending hours in what felt like the most remote wilderness, we popped out of the trees into a gorgeous mountain town and had a delicious meal. A train and bus ride brought us back to the front door. taken in Davos, Switzerland by @ericbrunner

Photos from the first day of riding here in Switzerland. The whole experience feels otherworldly. Soaring mountain peaks, aquamarine lakes, high speed alpine trails, connected with the best cafes I’ve had the pleasure of visiting.

@anf_from_above_ and I are here with our incredibly gracious hosts @odiwahn and @tamaratanea for a week before Odi, Andrew and I fly off to the Atlantic to race in @transmadeira Autumn Edition 2023.

13,000 vertical feet of descending in only a half day of riding. The hands are fried, the legs are toast, and the heart is completely full. Bring on the rest!

Grateful to share a bit of a party wave with our true overlords. These dolphins were cruising around the lineup all morning and I managed to scratch into a wave they had also surfed. Got lucky with the camera, too! It was sitting, forgotten on the beach, pointing out at the water and recording.

Reflecting on a 4th of July trip that I hope finds its way into tradition, a pilgrimage across the country to a remote and beautiful part of the world.

To be here in this place is to take a step away from society. Away from the noise, the distractions, away from everything that feels comfortable. To be here is to take a step into the unknown and to have a rare chance to truly disconnect.

Waist deep in the flowing water, everything fades away. The unceasing flow of the remote river fills the mind. The fly line hisses through the air, back and forth, directed to the top of a riffle or the center of a deep, dark pool. Every cast has the chance to be the one, the chance to fool the fish of a lifetime. As the line stretches downriver, every second seems to stretch with it. The presence of mind, of soul, of place, the connection to the river and to the self, all form an experience to treasure.

The Second College Grant is a place like no other, filled with memories and history stretching back generations. I am grateful to the land and to the people whose efforts make it possible to exist in such a place, removed from time.

Ronald Lee Brunner. March 17, 1931 - June 18, 2023.

As I drove down to Long Beach to say goodbye, the first memory that came to mind found us seated before a delicate and intricate aircraft model, the warm morning rays shining through the window. The small wooden dowels that made up the fuselage and wings are covered in a translucent yellow paper. The entire thing seems too impossibly fragile to ever take to the air. And yet, with the rubber-band propeller engaged, the small craft leapt from my hands…and straight into the wall.

During his first moment of lucidity, he asked me if I remembered the day we built an airplane together. Yes, Granddad. I remember like it was yesterday. I will forever cherish having a role model, mentor, and grandfather like you. Much of who I am today, I owe to you . Thank you for teaching me loyalty, integrity, honor, love, and compassion; thank you for teaching me about gratitude.

Even as his mind and body failed him, Ron only ever expressed gratitude: for the good life he had lived and for the family around him. He lived with dignity and showed unwavering kindness and good will to those he met in life.

I love you, Granddad. by @ericbrunner
