Before Jack found his folk sound he was a prolific inventor of heavy riffs both on guitar and synth. Since the 1980s, there has really only been one pair of trunks for Jim, and that’s Birdwell.

Jim grew up near the water, and Birdwells were synonymous with it. They were what you wore. Simple, well made, unmistakable. They weren’t just another pair of trunks. They were part of the culture.

Jim would go on to spend much of his life in fashion, and over the years his eye and taste became something people respected. He has always had an eye for the things that are made right, the things with a point of view, a history, and a reason for being the way they are.

And through all of it, when it came to the water, he chose Birdwell.

Years later, on the first day Jim and Cooper met, Cooper happened to be wearing a pair of Birdwells. Jim noticed immediately. It was a small detail that said quite a bit. Almost like showing your cards without realizing it. You knew what was going on and didn’t need to say much about it.

Looking back, that shared affection for Birdwell probably had a lot to do with creating the partnership they have today.

So when Birdwell asked Jim to be photographed for their new Made in USA collection, it felt like a special kind of full circle.

A man who has spent a lifetime appreciating great clothes, photographed in the trunks he would have chosen anyway, by a California company that has been part of the story all along.

We’re grateful to Birdwell for asking Jim to be a part of their story.

There aren’t many things in life better than watching your son become someone you genuinely admire.

Eli is kind, creative, humble, and always growing. One of the greatest unexpected gifts of my life has been getting to work alongside him. Every day he teaches me something, makes me better at what I do, and reminds me to see the world a little differently.

His music has a way of saying what words can’t, and every time I hear it, I’m reminded of the heart behind it.

In a couple of months he’ll marry the love of his life and start a family of his own. As a dad, there isn’t much more you can hope for.

I couldn’t be more proud to share that my son @eliicrane ‘s album has just dropped today. He has been so diligent in writing, performing, and perfecting these songs.

Finding and connecting with Paul @daylightsound was an amazing blessing, and experiencing the music they made together was once in a lifetime special.

I shot a roll of BW Ilford on the Leica for fun, I wish I would have shot 20 now.

I shot the album cover at our studio at Birdwell and he even let me layout the cover. I am forever grateful that he included me in the process.

So proud of what my boy is working on. He’s had a big year. He recovered from shoulder surgery, returned to NCAA D1 Volleyball with his school, graduated with awesome grades, wrote and recorded an album in Nashville, and now he’s got a job with an amazing company. The journey is arduous for the lucky. Seeing first hand the grind that goes in to making it look easy reminds me of a younger me and inspires me to keep it rolling in the back half of my life.

Humble, hard working, kind, and honest.

I’m Eli’s biggest fan.

Last year during the Miami marathon, Bryce my oldest of three sons, had a heart attack with 3 miles left to go. We were devastated. He ended up being okay, just over exertion accident, but it sat in the back of my mind when I found out he wanted to do this half IRONMAN in Oceanside today.

I was excited and nervous with a little bit of PTSD from what happened last time. He’d been training hard, the weather was cooler, and he knew how to prep better now after having gone through what he did in Miami. That said, I had butterflies in my stomach an hour into the run in full summer sun.

By the time he crossed the finish line I was bawling, both grateful and proud of what Bryce was able to accomplish. He’s my firstborn son and continues to lead a path with bright light.

His daughter was there to witness him overcoming adversity, and working hard towards achieving his goal.

He starts medical school in June, safe to say, Dr. Crane is a hammer.

Happy Holiday’s from The Crane’s!

What a year it’s been! From our oldest son, Bryce marrying the love of his life, Lauren, to our middle son, Eli, graduating from Pepperdine, and pursuing his music career, to our youngest son, Jack, returning to RISD to begin his sophomore year, studying furniture design, Eric and I have been learning the art of loving while letting go.
