ON THIS DAY — Helen Frankenthaler’s “Untitled,” 1969, was signed on this day, July 20, 1969. Currently on view as part of “Women Across America: 1945–1979,” at Eric Firestone Gallery, New York, through the end of the month. Helen Frankenthaler (b. New York, NY, 1928, d. 2011, Darien, CT) invented a technique of fully saturating her canvases with diluted paint, expanding the possibilities of abstract painting. She played a pivotal role in the transition from Abstract Expressionism to Color Field painting as an eminent second generation New York School artist. Best known for her large soak-stain paintings, this unstretched small-scale work was gifted by Frankenthaler to a friend, possibly accounting for its atypical size and irregular shape. Frankenthaler began spending summers in Provincetown in 1950. This work, dated July 20, 1969, features the richly saturated blues, sunny oranges, and sense of openness often associated with her Provincetown work. ARTIST SPOTLIGHT — WOMEN ACROSS AMERICA: 1945-1979, OPEN THROUGH END OF JULY | Associate Director Alabel Chapin discusses Pat Passlof, “Character for Sky,” 1973—part of the now-open exhibition “Women Across America: 1945–1979”. The gallery’s summer hours are now Monday – Friday, 10AM – 6PM. Pat Passlof (b. Brunswick, GA, 1928; d. New York, NY, 2011) was an abstract painter of the New York School whose tireless exploration of color and form gave her work a distinct voice. Having grown up in New York, in 1948 Passlof left to study at the famed Black Mountain College, where she took classes with Willem de Kooning. She continued to study with de Kooning privately after returning to New York, and became a fixture in the downtown arts scene, attending meetings at The Club (eventually organizing “The Wednesday Night Club”), showing at the March Gallery on 10th Street, and marrying fellow painter Milton Resnick. She lived and worked on the Lower East Side, in a former synagogue, and also spent time in the Shawangunk Mountain area of upstate New York, where she took influence from the space and air of the mountain ridge for her painting. Character for Sky demonstrates the all-over monochrome and calligraphic touch characteristic of Passlof’s practice in the 1970s. References to geometry are embedded in the network of strokes, suggesting notations or spatial articulations. The work’s title alludes to Passlof’s study of astrology and cosmology, a marriage of intuition and structure that she foregrounds in her work. NOMAD HAMPTONS 2026 — Open Today, 6/25 • Eric Firestone Gallery is pleased to announce its participation in NOMAD HAMPTONS 2026 with a two-person installation of painted ceramics by Torben Gammelgaard (b. 1972) and paintings by Almo Talud (b. 1985). This is the first U.S. edition of the traveling fair for art and design, and takes place at the Watermill Center, on the East End of Long Island.  Torben Gammelgard, a Danish artist based in Copenhagen and Lynæs, paints and glazes large-scale plates and vessels with inventive, whimsically-drawn animals, like birds, turtles, cats, and moose. Directly and expressively rendered, these playful animals occupy the surfaces of the ceramics in a dramatic and seductive way.  Almo Talud was born in Miami, FL, and grew up in Manizales, Colombia. His figurative paintings represent domestic life and celebratory occasions, populated by men and horses, gathered outdoors or around tables. They reflect memories and experiences in the small Colombian city of Talud’s youth and young adulthood. Talud examines these scenes through a queer lens, contradicting the dominant patriarchal culture that surrounded him.  NOMAD HAMPTONS 2026

The exhibition has been extended through July 31, 2026. Eric Firestone Gallery is pleased to present “Women Across America: 1945–1979,” an exhibition that showcases connections between women across the country in the post-World War II period. This exhibition highlights the rich tradition of abstraction within the period across various mediums. ARTIST SPOTLIGHT — WOMEN ACROSS AMERICA: 1945-1979 | Associate Director Alabel Chapin discusses Grace Hartigan, “Donna,” 1951—part of the now-open exhibition “Women Across America: 1945–1979” Grace Hartigan (b. Newark, NJ, 1922; d. 2008) was a significant member of the New York School who variously drew on art history, everyday life, and poetry as she moved across figuration and gestural abstraction. “Donna” was painted for the artist’s niece because she had been born on Hartigan’s own birthday and belongs to an early group of gestural abstractions that would give way to increasingly representational subject matter. In 1951, Hartigan mounted her first solo exhibition of ten paintings at Tibor de Nagy. Gallery founder John Bernard Myers likened the paintings to vines, “reaching with fresh tentacles to form tangles of density,” articulating a “sensuality re-affirmed” in the postwar milieu. Indeed, Hartigan eschewed the modernist emphasis on aesthetic purity in favor of paintings embedded with reference to poetry, nature, and the body. ARTIST SPOTLIGHT — WOMEN ACROSS AMERICA: 1945-1979 | Associate Director Alabel Chapin discusses Hedda Sterne, “Untitled,” 1947—part of the now-open exhibition “Women Across America: 1945–1979” Hedda Sterne (b. 1910) was a Romanian-American artist whose prolific career intersected with European Modernism, Surrealism and the New York School. Championed by Peggy Guggenheim and Betty Parsons, Sterne continuously sought new ways of interpreting the world around her. The artist often worked in a highly physical way using palette knives, her fingers, or sharp tools to scrape lines into the paint with a sgraffito technique. Sterne came to New York in 1941 as a WWII refugee. Within the year, she began a dreamlike, autobiographical series of work based on memories of her childhood in Bucharest titled Memories of Romania. This body of work represents a transition in her practice before Sterne abandoned figuration in favor of machinic, architectural, and nonobjective abstraction. Sterne created this painting shortly after she traveled with artist Miguel Covarrubias throughout Mexico, where she saw the visual language of the country’s Catholic altars and churches. The distinctive imagery of this painting connects to Sterne’s experience of displacement, her life-long study of philosophy, as well as her interest in Surrealism Hedda Sterne Untitled, 1947 oil on canvas 40 x 30 in.
