Eric James Dwyer is an emerging textile artist based in Atlanta, Georgia, whose work examines how complex woven structures translate imagery to cloth and how material choices influence legibility and emotional tone. His process-driven practice approaches weaving as a method of attentive translation and care. Dwyer learned to weave at the Penland School of Craft in 2022 and has since completed residencies at the Praxis Digital Weaving Lab and Penland, deepening his interest in structural complexity, digital processes, and the relationship between image, pattern, and woven form.
Textiles & Tea is a weekly artist interview series, hosted by the Handweavers Guild of America, Inc., featuring fiber artists from around the globe. For more information, visit: www.weavespindye.org/textiles-and-tea

@Queericq began his journey into weaving only three years ago in a Penland workshop with Lisa Hill (@plainweave).

“I was really nervous to learn, because I thought it would be like, ‘you must do it this way’ and ‘oh and it’s not perfect’ and a lot of measuring.” he told us.

Happily, Eric fell in love with weaving and has been learning and experimenting ever since.

This gorgeous weave came out of a prompt to “reimagine America.”

We had the pleasure of speaking with Eric during his winter residency here at Penland.

🙏🙏🙏

Penland’s Winter Residency program is a competitive, short-term residency for artists seeking to work independently in one of our 16 studios during Penland’s quiet season.

Shared studio access is provided to a small number of artists during each two-week session session; we invite enough people to encourage conversation and creative camaraderie, but not so many that focused attention in the studio is compromised. taken in Penland School of Crafts by @handweaversorg

I started this year out taking an IKAT workshop with Mary Zicafoose @maryzicafoose , hosted by the Chattahoochee Handweavers Guild. IKAT involves using resist tape on yarn and then dyeing the yarn; creating a pattern of dyed areas and undyed areas. Just head over to Mary’s instagram and you’ll get a taste of what’s possible with this technique. If you ever have the opportunity to take a workshop with her, or even just chat with her for a little bit - I highly suggest you take it.

I am sharing images of me at the loom, Mary Zicafoose, then two images that remind me of what’s at the core of these workshops (craft, community, and conversation), and finally a detail of my finished scarf. by @handweaversorg

They will also be collecting wigs, make-up, toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, brushes, toilet paper and paper towels.
I’ll be posting more to my story as the weekend approaches!

Reading Stone Butch Blues in the Mountains was my first woven piece, started just one week after beginning to learn to weave on a floor loom, and completed within two weeks of learning. It’s done with raya technique on hand woven twill. I was reading Stone Butch Blues by Leslie Feinberg at the time, which was a heavy read. There was a disparity between the accepting environment of Penland and the horrors I was reading about in this book every night. The woven piece is a contemplation of the queer body as a target; the nature versus nurture debate that surrounds discussions around queer rights; passion/sadness/exhaustion; police violence and the queer body / person; body/personhood; wanting to stand out vs wanting to blend in; “like them”, a desire to “fit in”. It’s essential to the slow nature of my practice for pieces to be contemplations / meditations. by @handweaversorg
