It’s now been more than half a year since I did HYROX, a week after my second half marathon, and it was probably the highlight of my year.
Now I can talk about it without getting sentimental. For most of y’all who don’t know, fitness has been embedded in my life from a very young age, with gaps and inconsistency but I always saw my parents moving, and that is a privilege. While so many things are now being normalized and more communities are representing health in different forms, the act of doing the thing will always make me proud, because there’s never ending improvement in movement.
I was incredibly sentimental about this race, not because I wanted PRs or wanted to post about it (cause y’all know that’s my shiiit)—but because I fully paused to acknowledge what I was doing. I was driving to the city, which is only a drive away, to work out with my father, who impulsively bought tickets a week before, right after I finished explaining all the HYROX hype to him because it was mentioned at his gym.
It made me realize how lucky I am: to have the ability to enjoy paid movement as a regular part of my life, to have a healthy relationship with my father, and to blend both…to move alongside him. I’ve worked out with him plenty of times, so maybe it was the noise behind this competitive workout, or the charm of NYC, but it goes to show that if we paused to truly acknowledge the blessings in our ordinary lives, we’d all feel a little fuller.
My dad is a strong man in every sense, and I’d like to think I’ve inherited that, because my petite self was able to push through men’s weight😌🤏🏼 wish yall could’ve seen me w the sled💋 by @erickacastro10
