잠 못들던 어느날 밤, 수천 개의 조각으로 분열되고 뭉치기를 반복하던 이미지들이 머릿속을 완전히 잠식했다. 그 잔상들을 쫓아 세밀하게 기록해 만든 삼각형의 틀. 그 안에 갇힌 자화상이 긴 여정의 시작이었다. 그 거대한 피라미드 구조의 청사진은, 이후에 탄생된 신작들과 함께 전시라는 형태로 다시 태어나 제주도 애월의 깊은 산 속에 자리잡았다.

우리가 추구하는 것, 우리를 구성하는 것, 우리가 믿는 수많은 가치와 요소들은 과연 우리를 어디로 데려가고 있을까. 그 질문을 거시적인 시선과 미시적인 관점으로 최대한 깊게 파고들었다. 오랫동안 실험해온 영화적 스토리텔링과 정통 애니메이션의 근본, 음향과 음악, 그리고 공간과 회화에 대한 이해를 바탕으로, 하나의 전혀 새로운 세계관을 만들고자 했다.

많은 사람들이 이곳을 찾았는데, 누군가는 하루 종일 작품 앞에 서있었다고 했고, 누군가는 눈물을 흘렸다고 했다. 거대한 서사 속에서 아주 작은 자신을 마주했고, 그럼에도, 아니 그렇기 때문에 어떻게 살아가야 하는가에 대한 작은 실마리를 얻었다고 말한 사람들도 있었다. 긍정이든 부정이든 무언가를 차별화된 각도로 제시할 수 있었던 전시였다는 점만큼은 분명히 말할 수 있다.

끝으로 이 작품들이 세상에 나올 수 있도록, 이 전시가 가능하도록 최선을 다해준 수많은 분들께 진심으로 감사의 마음을 전한다. 그리고 나는 잠시 펼쳐두었던 이야기 꾸러미를 배낭 속에 다시 집어넣는다. 조금 더 무거워진 배낭, 하지만 한결 가벼운 발걸음으로 다음 여정을 준비한다. 무언가의 마지막은 늘 가슴아프지만, 또 다른 시작으로 이어질테니.. ‘순환’이라는 전시의 주제처럼.

Everything began with a simple question: What are we pursuing, what are we made of, and where are all these values we believe in taking us? I tried to explore these questions from both a microscopic and a cosmic point of view. Through cinematic storytelling, the foundations of traditional animation, sound and music, and an understanding of space and painting, I wanted to build a world that felt entirely new, something not just to be seen, but to be experienced.

I want to express my sincere gratitude to everyone who made this work and this exhibition possible. I never take any of this for granted. Now, I quietly pack the bundle of stories I had unfolded back into my bag, carry it over my shoulder, and prepare for the next journey. Endings are always a little painful, but as the theme of this exhibition suggests, every ending eventually leads to a new beginning. Like a cycle. taken in House of Refuge by @erickoheart

Curatorial View — 6F & 5F Erick Oh ㅣ에릭 오 @erickoheart

에릭 오는 애니메이션과 영상의 언어를 통해 거대한 사회 구조와 문명에서부터 개인의 내면과 감정에 이르기까지, 인간을 둘러싼 여러 층위의 모습을 에니메이션 기법을 통해 서사로 풀어낸다.

전시의 출발점인 6층에서는 〈OPERA〉와 〈SUPPER〉를 통해 인간 사회와 문명의 구조를 거시적으로 바라본다. 〈OPERA〉가 피라미드 안에 얽힌 수많은 인간과 사건을 통해 사회의 복잡한 구조를 펼쳐 보인다면, 〈SUPPER〉는 인간의 욕망을 디너 테이블이라는 메타포로 압축해 보여준다. 두 작품을 서로 마주 배치해 서로 다른 스케일과 방식으로 드러나는 인간 사회의 모습을 함께 바라볼 수 있도록 구성했다.

6층이 사회와 문명을 구조적 시선으로 바라보았다면, 5층에선 집단과 개인, 혹은 개인과 개인의 관계를 바라보는 시점으로 이동한다. 특히〈METAMODERNITY Ⅱ〉에서는 스크린 다섯 개로으로의 분할 상영을 작가에게 제안했고, 작가는 이에 더해 각각의 화면이 독립된 장면으로 존재하면서도 서로 연결되도록 영상들을 구성해 시청각적인 몰입감을 연출했다. 맞은편의 〈LIBRA〉는 저울 위에서 서로를 당기는 두 무리의 반복적인 움직임을 통해 끊임없이 기울고 다시 균형을 이루는 상태를 보여준다. 두 작품을 마주 배치해 한쪽에서는 복잡한 관계의 다면성을, 다른 한쪽에서는 관계 속에서 지속적으로 조정되는 균형을 바라본다.

Erick Oh uses animation and moving image to explore human experience, from social structures and civilization to individuals and their relationships.

The exhibition opens on the 6th floor with 〈OPERA〉 and 〈SUPPER〉, which examine human society from different perspectives. While 〈OPERA〉 depicts a complex social structure through countless interconnected figures and events, 〈SUPPER〉 uses the dining table as a metaphor for structures shaped by human desire. Positioned opposite each other, the works offer contrasting perspectives on society.

On the 5th floor, the focus shifts to relationships between society and individuals. For 〈METAMODERNITY Ⅱ〉, we proposed a five-screen installation, which the artist developed into interconnected yet independent scenes, creating an immersive audiovisual experience. Opposite it, 〈LIBRA〉 explores desire, choice, and balance through figures pulling against one another, revealing the tensions inherent in human relationships.

일주일 전 오늘, 또 하나의 전시를 오픈했습니다. 439개의 폐휴대폰으로 OSS 캐릭터의 얼굴을 구성한 설치 작품부터, 전시 형식으로 새롭게 풀어낸 [메타모더니티], 그리고 서울에서는 처음 선보이는 대표작 [오페라], [서퍼], [리브라]까지. 저의 다양한 작업들을 강남 도심 한복판에서 만나보실 수 있습니다. 전시는 11월 말까지 무료로 진행되며, 다른 작가님들의 작품들도 함께 만나보실 수 있으니 편하게 들러주시길 바랍니다. 감사합니다.

A week ago today, I opened another exhibition in Seoul. From an installation featuring the face of the [OSS] character built from 439 discarded cell phones, to a new exhibition-based presentation of [Metamodernity], as well as the first Seoul presentations of [Opera], [Supper], and [Libra], you can experience a wide range of my work in the heart of Gangnam. The exhibition is free and open through the end of November, alongside works by many other wonderful artists. If you’re in Seoul, come by and check it out. Thank you.

Earlier this month, I had the great honor of presenting my work at @friezeofficial, one of the world’s leading international art fairs.

After many years in animation, I’ve continued to explore beyond its boundaries, even while feeling an invisible wall between animation and contemporary art. That’s why presenting my work at Frieze Seoul felt especially meaningful. A small but significant step in my journey.
