Episode 19.

This episode is a conversation between artists Erika Sprey and Mala Kline. Erika is an artist-researcher, writer, and independent curator based in Brussels and Mala is a performer, choreographer and writer based in Slovenia. They've collaborated several times.
In this episode, Erika and Mala speak from within their practices, which have specific cosmologies and belief systems that surround dreaming. The discussion explores their experiences of artistic and therapeutic techniques, drawing on many traditions and teachings from different cultures.

Dreaming Communities is a series of þ thorns þ, curated by Victoria Pérez Royo. The series hosts invited artists who work with ‘dreaming substance.’ Here the adjective “dreaming” does not refer solely to nighttime sleep, but serves as an umbrella term for a whole series of images that have been conceived in a fragmentary and scattered way in various disciplines and practices: memories, anticipations, daydreams and night dreams, ghosts and specters, visions, and hallucinations, among others.
You can read a full text about the series, written by Victoria, on our website.

You can listen to this podcast wherever you usually listen to podcasts, or via the link in our bio. You will find a full transcript and list of resources mentioned on our website. by @erikasprey

Today is a special day! 🪲 i am so proud to launch this website about my artistic research Dream Craft, supported by @mondriaanfonds. From now on, all (latest) info regarding the research can be found here 🪄

https://dreamingandcrafting.com

So much gratitude to Clara Lezla @bouncy_beni, who is giving shape to the Dream Craft visuals all along, in tandem with coder Bartek Pierściński @bartekpierscinski Together, they built a brilliant lightweight structure allowing for endless playing and tinkering.

How to navigate this site?

〰️ If a word piques your interest while reading the core text, click on the hyperlinked word and an image (or several) will be revealed.

➰ Every image is accompanied by a quote or piece of text that relates to both word and image (in non-lineair, oneiric and sometimes inscrutable ways).

➿ Beneath the text, you’ll find hashtagged hyperlinks that may reference the source, or lead to another stream of thought-feeling altogether…

I will continuously keep changing and adding to the scaffold, so if this topic interests you, it may be worth revisiting it from time to time 🐇

Looking forward to your comments! Xx by @erikasprey

𝗧𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 • 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝘇𝗼 ‘𝟮𝟱

In 2023, a group of artists and anthropologists came together in @casa_snowapplemx to get a taste of the rich patrimonio onírico in Mexico, one of my homes.

Much had to be digested after this first bewildering exploration: how to hold oneself (and behave) on the cusp of sometimes radically divergent worlds, meeting peers, other worlds and earth beings in a truly reciprocal and context-sensitive way? How to embody an informed ‘politics of invitation’ and ‘good host- and guesthood’?

I’m thrilled to return after two years with this pilot edition, supported by @amartefonds, together with dear co-curating friend, artist and abre caminos @tonio.monroy in what I hope to become a yearly traveling dream school in Mexico and beyond. Weaving art, philosophy, anthropology, and situated healing practices, continuing the reparative work of reclaiming rejected knowledges of @earthcraftkabk, through the prism of pre-christian, pre-hispanic multinaturalist dream lineages.

During this first edition, we are joined by dear deep land listener Laura Burns @_laura_burns in Mexico City, where we will visit sites of oneiric interest and speak to @johannes_neurath , Patricia Gallardo Arias, Federica Rainelli and many others. Journeying afterwards to la Sierra Otomí, we will learn from from Yųhų ritual experts - bädi, los que saben-under the guidance of artist @lauravalencialozada and her collaborator and friend @leobardojacoblechuga We conclude by seeking vision in the valleys of Amatlán and Malinalco after climbing el Popo and his sleeping volcano lover Iztaccíhuatl, meeting @taniaximena @carlossan.amezquita @robertleefish @cinemasophie and other artists and weather whisperers who receive their gift through fulminous dreaming.

~*~

Dream Craft is a transdisciplinary, tentacular exploration into living and reclaimed dream practices as transformative knowledge-making in times of collective soul loss and wetiko.

Erika Sprey (she/her) is an artist-researcher, writer, and independent curator based in Brussels. With a Dutch fatherland and Mexican motherland, she has been practicing a form of cosmopolitical diplomacy-trying to bridge continents, knowledge systems, and ways of being—since a very early age. Following a trajectory through creative photography, comparative literature, cultural studies, philosophy, activism, performing arts, as well as divinatory arts and other so-called rejected knowledges, she is regularly invited to give lectures, lead workshops, and provide dramaturgical guidance, while also running a parallel practice as a systemic constellations facilitator and counselor with a focus on dreamwork.

Hear from Erika on episode 19 of b thorns b, available 15 April 2026.

This episode is part of a series called 'Dreaming Communities', curated by Victoria Perez Royo. by @erikasprey

MEETING THE MONSTER AT EYE-LEVEL: On Dreams and Cosmopolitical Diplomacy 🟫
| Essay by Erika Sprey @erikasprey
Featured in The Day it Rains Jellyfish publication

Erika Sprey’s essay explores how “monsters” - hybrid, shifting, and often misunderstood - reveal the fractures and possibilities within our worlds. Moving through dreams, indigenous cosmologies, and the idea of cosmopolitical diplomacy, this text invites us to rethink fear, transformation, and what it means to encounter the ‘other’ without hierarchy. Blurring the line between human and more-than-human, it asks how we can meet different worlds on their own terms. What if the monster isn’t something to fear, but something to learn from? A reflection on dreaming as a space for negotiation, connection, and radical imagination.

EL ARTE DE SOÑ-ARTE | THE ART OF DREAMING ART 🌙

* El Sabado 28 de febrero 2026, @casa_snowapplemx — Tres Cruces 83, Coyoacán, CDMX
* Entrada libre | todas las partes son de acceso libre
* En español con traducción al inglés disponible
* Bar y jardín abiertos, con obra de la residencia a la vista
⚠️ El taller de las 16:30 tiene cupo limitado (15 personas) — reserva tu lugar: erikasprey@gmail.com

‘Constelaciones ancestrales’ is a process developed within the framework of Encuentros Oníricos 2026, a nomadic, research-based artist-in-residence program. Conceived as both a testing ground and a ritual space, it brings dreamwork into direct relation with systemic constellations.

Through two interconnected workshops, we will explore how dreams can be approached as collective, ancestral, and relational fields, and how systemic constellation practices can open new ways of listening to and working with dream images.

Practical information:
~ Thu 5 & Fri 6 February from 10:00 till 13:00
~ Workshops can be attended separately
~ The workshop will be held in English and Spanish
~ Free of cost
~ To participate, please send us a DM or an email to erikasprey@gmail.com
