RISING STARS This sommelier is redefining Atlanta hospitality one story-driven pour at a time. For sommelier Joon Lim, wine was never the plan. “It was more of a hobby that got out of hand,” he says. Lim studied accounting at the University of Kentucky, graduated in 2004 and worked briefly as a banker, but the prospect of spending decades behind a desk never felt right. Hospitality did. Once wine entered the picture, it became impossible to shake. Born in South Korea and raised in Lexington, Kentucky, Lim moved to Georgia nearly 20 years ago to be closer to family and tap into Atlanta’s growing restaurant scene. In 2008, opportunity took shape at Park Cafe, a now-shuttered Southern bistro and wine bar in downtown Duluth. Starting as a barback and then a bartender, Lim began tasting wine seriously for the first time. A manager encouraged him to pursue certification, setting him on the marathon journey of study, blind tasting and service mastery that defines the Court of Master Sommeliers. He became a certified sommelier while working at Rathbun’s in the 2010s where he was grounded in fine wine and exacting service. His path eventually led to Cherokee Town & Country Club, where he rose to head sommelier, overseeing a 22,000-bottle cellar. This cemented his reputation for deep knowledge and polished service, placing him squarely within Buckhead’s fine dining and private-club ecosystem. But after the COVID-19 pandemic, Lim didn’t want to return to the restaurant world. While exploring his options, he connected with a private collector interested in auctioning off a wine collection. Lim stepped in to set reserve prices, coordinate logistics and align expectations between the client and auction house. RISING STARS Planting deep restaurant roots. Jamey Shirah grew up in Hopeful, a small farming community in south Georgia. There, on 1,000 acres, he learned lessons about patience, hard work and follow- through—lessons, it turns out, that translate remarkably well to the restaurant business. Today, Shirah is the CEO of Revival Restaurant Group, an Atlanta-based hospitality company with six concepts under its umbrella, including Luella and the Family Dog in Atlanta, and Little Betty Steak Bar, Sea Bar, Uptown Cantina and Southern Kitchen and Bar in Birmingham, Alabama. The company also operates a construction company, a firewood company and a wellness brand. Needless to say, Shirah has never been one to let good ground go to waste. Shirah didn’t plan to go into the restaurant business. After losing his HOPE Scholarship during his first semester at the University of Georgia, his father delivered a simple message: “Figure it out.” Shirah did, staying enrolled at UGA while making extra cash to cover tuition. He started at the door of Bourbon Street bar in Athens, serving as security and handling trash detail before moving over to City Bar and working his way up to bartending and managing. The partners he met in those years became the same ones who in 2010 helped him open The Ivy, a Buckhead sports bar that became a go-to destination for twenty-somethings. “One of our philosophies has always been to build concepts that we enjoy and want to be in. If you align your passions with your talents, and then align those with a need in the marketplace, you have a much higher chance of being successful,” Shirah says. RISING STARS TAYLOR CARTER A leap of faith landed this lawyer where she was meant to be. When Taylor Carter moved to Atlanta for her job in December 2023, she didn’t know a soul. However, just 2½ years later, she proudly calls the city home. She and her fiancé got engaged at the Swan House, and she can name a series of her favorite golf courses for catching a round without missing a beat. She volunteers for several organizations, and she was recently named a Meals on Wheels Tastemaker, thanks to her contributions at the nonprofit. Even though she grew up in Pennsylvania rooting for the Pittsburgh Steelers, she now cheers unabashedly for the Atlanta Falcons. In fewer than three years, Carter has found more than her professional footing; she’s found her community. Carter earned a law degree in 2021 from Fordham University in New York. While in the city, she started at a large law firm before pivoting to the entertainment world, taking a litigation role at NBCUniversal, where she worked across branches including Peacock, Telemundo, Bravo and NBC Sports. A chance encounter at an Atlanta event in 2023 led to a LinkedIn connection with her future boss, and seven months later, she stepped out on faith and headed south. “You have to take charge of your career; you can’t just let it happen to you,” Carter says, echoing advice she received from a mentor early in her career. “You have to be an active participant in your journey.” Today, Carter serves as assistant general counsel for AMB Sports and Entertainment, part of the Arthur Blank Family of Businesses. RISING STARS Meet the model and cancer survivor who makes clients feel comfortable in front of the lens. Alexandra Zak’s love of photography began as a child in Roswell when she says she became scared of the passing of time due to a series of traumatic losses. “I’d take photographs of everything— my animals, my friends, my wallpaper—when I was little,” she says. “I became obsessed with time, and photography was a way for me to keep it standing still.” She was so prolific that her parents had to limit the number of rolls of film she could develop in a week. Later, she began modeling as a teen, gaining exposure on the other side of the camera. Buckhead-based Zak continued to model into her 20s, including while at Georgia State University, from which she graduated in 2010 with a psychology degree. She worked in bars and clubs from 2010 until 2018, running to photo jobs around town in between gigs. Zak is still signed with CLICK Models in Atlanta and New York, although her photography business takes up most of her time these days. In 2016, she was diagnosed with melanoma and required major surgery. She got sober in 2018 and became cancer-free in 2019. “I knew I needed to live differently. I changed my life and perspective. I decided to start facing things instead of running from them,” she says. “Being sober and my career are tied together. ” Working with certified financial planner and entrepreneur Deanna LaRue in 2022 was another pivotal career moment. “She’s self-made, and she deeply encouraged me,” Zak says.
