Last week, my wife @meikebergmannfotografie and I spent a few days in London, celebrating birthdays and anniversaries and many years of being in love. She gifted us tickets to see the wonderful @raylamontagne , who we last saw 20 years ago in LA, and it was magic.
Here is my cover of one of my favorite songs by Ray.

Today I happened upon a song from my first solo LP: “Footprints” from 2004. I was happy to hear how it sounded, and more importantly, how it felt :)
I listened to several more songs, remembering how and why I wrote and recorded them.
I was lucky enough to have several incredible LA friends play on this album. Garrett Ray played the drums in my little home studio (Garrett has gone on to play with Vampire Weekend and many others), and his work really provided a backbone and solid sound for the whole album.
David Green played electric guitar all over the album (he is best known as a founding member of Los Abandoned, a seminal punk en Español LA band), and his vibey, deserty textures brought the Air/Calexico feel I needed :)
Stewart Cole played trumpet on the closing song, blowing my mind with a fully-orchestrated horn section that greatly exceeded my expectations. (Stewart went on to play Edward Sharpe and Mumford & Sons, to the surprise of nobody.)
The wonderful Quincy Coleman and Adrianne Gonzales, 2 of the finest singer-songwriters in LA in the early 2000s, added vocals to a couple songs.
To top it all off, the man himself, Mike Bozzi, mastered the album when it was finished, glueing it all together sonically and bringing a warmth that doesn’t exist without his golden ears.
This album and its creation mark a moment in time for me, in a very different place and era. I hope you will go have a listen - it’s very worth it ❤️

You won’t hear any Erik Penny songs, but I guarantee you will know every single song I play, and you will probably sing along to most of them ❤️

On June 22 of this year, my good old friend Josh Gil @niceyabjeff left his body behind, and moved on to another plane, a plane that he always seemed connected to anyway, at least since I met him in 2006 or 2007.
At the time, I worked at @joesrestaurant in Venice Beach, and Josh came on as chef de cuisine, and blew all our minds and palettes, earning Joe’s a Michelin Star in the process.
My wife @meikebergmannfotografie was just beginning her career as a food photographer at that time, and one of her first proper shoots was Josh’s food. She and Josh loved each other from the start, and their mutual respect and admiration and affection was essential to the friendship we all shared for 2 decades.
Josh tested his punk rock pop-up kitchen on us one evening at his apartment, preparing scallops and pork belly and an array of veggies and foams and sauces, all of us high af, experiencing an incredible dinner with SoCal punk blaring louder than bombs.
My wife and I moved to Berlin in 2008, and we stayed in touch with Josh, one of a small handful of LA friends who we knew would never leave our lives. We all met again in 2016 on a trip to LA, and one more time around 2019, when Josh came to Europe and made a pitstop in Berlin to see us. He fell in love with our kids, and they with him. He did handstands for them in the sandbox at our favorite Biergarten. We stayed up too late on our balcony, and he missed his flight and had to stay 2 more days, thank god.

I wanted to paint him, to see him again. To look into his beautiful eyes, and try to do him justice.
