Today marks three years since Hurricane Ian. Fort Myers Beach has become my home. I’ve lived in Fort Myers now for six years and attended Florida Gulf Coast University. These photos were taken last night by me, and the last is just a small part of the major damage that occurred from the 17ft of surge on the Island. I lost my job from the flooding, and the restaurants I bartend at were completely washed away. Thousands of people lost their job, and some lost their lives. EVERYTHING was destroyed. This community welcomed me with open arms and has treated me with nothing but kindness. I am extremely blessed and grateful to have met the people I have this past year. Since bartending and starting my own business on the beach, I hear horror stories of how people had to jump off roofs into the water because their homes were about to float out into the ocean, had to hide in floating fridges going by to escape the 17 feet of surge off their roofs, held onto palm trees for their lives, lost their pets in the flooding and people are still not in their homes. ITS BEEN THREE YEARS!!! One of my close regulars has no walls still, no windows, nothing. He lives and sleeps with no hot water and has to fight off mosquitoes every single night when he tries to sleep. I have friends who lost everything to their name they have been working their whole lives towards. ITS BEEN THREE YEARS! Local buisnesses are still trying to recover and the South end of the Island is still a mess. I love this place, and community. I love Fort Myers Beach. I pray we never see anything like that again and pray for the people and their families who lost their lives.
