Unfortunately, I'm not very happy with the quality of the scans from the shop that developed this roll I shot back in May, but here's one I like. I can't begin to understand* why the sign is reflected upside down and backward in the middle of the photo like that - whether it was a process artifact or something about my camera itself - but in any case, kind of a happy (or at least interesting) accident.

*I can BEGIN to understand/surmise, I just wish I knew how to achieve it on purpose taken in Lethbridge, Alberta by @erinanne_mick

No clever caption, just want to talk about this photo.

I've been dabbling in film photography for three years now. I bought a little Canon T50 off a collector in Alberta right before I drove back to Toronto during the first big wave of airline cancellations due to the 2020 shut-down. At that time, I was gifted a huge bag of expired film from my mom @janealmick, leftover from her time taking a photography course at uni. No matter how kind of *meh* I am at the photography itself, I'm continually mesmerized by how much my results vary according to the stock I've chosen. The photos from the film my mom gave me (mostly B&W AGFAPAN 100 or 400) developed with the most beautiful, deep grain. It reminded me of old westerns. I loved the flaws. I became obsessed.

I started out really blind when it came to choosing stock, so honestly I just copied my filmmaker and photographer friends. For instance, I knew a favorite stock of my close friend @getradified was Kodak Portra 400, so I tried that for a while. When I figured I wanted to do more night photography than he does, I chose to try the same stock in 800 iso instead. Once, Annex Photo had a sale on Kodak Ektar 100, so I took that home to Alberta with me to shoot the prairie at golden hour and adored the results because of that stock's unbelievably rich reds. Whenever I didn't want to buy the pricier stock, I opted for the basic Fujifilm available at drugstores. For a while, I used that to play with double-exposure.

Lately, I've been trying CineStill -motion picture film stock (Kodak, I believe) repurposed for shooting, as the name suggests, stills. This spring, @jonglendon took notice of my blind experimentation with a roll of CineStill 800T and kindly led me through some of the finer basics of tungsten vs. daylight film.

This picture is from that roll, and I just love it. The stock has rendered magnificent red halos on the truck's headlights, and on some of the streetlamps, leaving their true-to-eyesight deep golden cast on the ground and the brick building to our left. But the two LEDs on our right have remained a lovely greenish-blue (cyan). Movie lovers will recognize this (cont'd...) taken in Toronto, Ontario by @erinanne_mick

SLEEP THROUGH SUMMER, my solo directorial debut (hair flip), is world premiering at Fantasia International Film Festival in a few weeks and frankly I haven't been able to pick my jaw up off the floor since I got the news.

Thank you @cemo25 and @moviesruinedmylife for programming this little movie my friends made with me at your legendary festival. I am astounded!
