Something To Leave Behind is out today! Here’s the full video by @jercoons. The widescreen cinematic version is on YouTube and I hope you’ll check it out. Jer wrote the lyrics and titles out by hand. :)

When the @jerandco studio needed a new roof a couple years back I signed on to fix it up. Jer, being the gentle-giant-documentarian that he is, came out with his camera and got some footage. This whole video was spontaneous if you can believe that. And while it looks like I’m the only one up there I could not have got the old roof off and the new one down in the window of good weather we had without the help of @s.b.wooster, @shawnsybillops, and Indigo from @montpelier_construction who generously helped on his day off. Also Emily and Jer for doing most of the ground shingle clean up when it was getting dark and I was getting tired. Oh and Jer saved me from falling off the roof on one of these days too. 👷‍♂️

Speaking of spontaneity, I’d put this song in the “where in the universe did that come from” category not because I think it’s out of this world profound or anything, but because I wrote it in about the amount of time it takes to sing it and when we went to record the same thing happened. A few live takes, Willy jumping on the keyboard to see what spirits of basement tapes past we could pay our respects to, golden harmonies from the great beyond (by way of @whosagoodbaby) and that was it. A little in house mixing and we shipped it out to Chris Colbert for mastering. So if you’re still with me I guess I’m saying that Time Is Cool and Not All Minutes Are Made The Same.

Don’t Take Up Her Time is out today. I think part of why this song works is it can be seen through a few different lenses. It’s a song to a younger self, it’s a song between friends. Some days it’s still a current and necessary reminder to be accountable and respect people’s time on this earth.

1,000 thanks to @__allysonsmith for helping me get this song online and out in the world and for working with me every week to make this whole music thing roll. Thanks to her not only for her focus and knowledge but for being willing to work with the person I am. We had a few last minute to do list items to take care of before this release last night and I spent the first 15 minutes on the phone talking about Bruce Hornsby. Speaking of being considerate of people’s time…it’s a work in progress but it’s worth working on.

Thank you to @whosagoodbaby for knowing how to play every instrument and for championing these songs. Thanks to @mark_balderston for engineering the session at @biglakerecordingco and to @_nickjohnston for adding organ while on the road.

New song out later this month and that’s going to mean a flurry of posts from me and I want to say something before doing that. I’m wary of participating in the attention economy in even a small way, especially as I’m working in my personal life on my own focus, attention, and respect of people’s time. I mean it when I say I don’t want to take up yours. I’m working, in my own little independent music world, on finding ways to share music outside of the realm of algorithms that have ulterior corporate motives behind the scenes. Maybe someday there will be an altruistic platform created that allows people to share and promote work without the big tech strings attached. But in absence of that, I’m going to be using this app as a starting place for sharing my music. If you like it, I hope you’ll come to a show or sign up for my email list or connect in whatever way feels right to you. So I’ll be posting, but then I’ll be going for a run, cooking dinner for my wife, walking with my dog, and drinking a tall beer in a lawn chair while the sun goes down in the valley. Hope you’ll do some version of the same, whatever that might look like in your life.

I’m in the process of making the kind of record I’ve dreamed of, while already writing new songs for the next one. And at the same time I’m finally feeling grown up enough to know that songs aren’t the only thing worth tending to. But that’s a post for another time, let’s not give ‘em another minute tonight.

Here is late night, wedding band Erin to say that you can hear regular-ass/street clothes/early evening Erin @monkeyhouse_vt this Friday. Doors are at 7:30, @thebublight and @vegavvega_ will be playing sets of their life-affirming songs and it will be a night to remember.

If you see my friend Willy today, make sure you wish him a happy birthday. You’d have to be in Toronto, but maybe you are. I wouldn’t be half the musician I am without knowing him. To paraphrase Rivers Cuomo in that 2010 collab with B.o.B, every time he touch that track it turns into gold. 🧙‍♂️

Might be *cringe* to quote your own lyrics, but one of my favorite lines I’ve ever written is “Trust Me, Kid, when it all fades behind, all that’s left is all that is sweet. Like desert stars and neon bars, and all the friends that you got to meet.” This show will have all of that, except the desert I guess. Can’t wait to share a bill with these humble titans of song. Hope to see you there @monkeyhouse_vt

Congratulations Zoe and Sam! Zo, while I might feel sad sometimes that you’re not a kid anymore, that never lasts long because I’m proud to watch you grow up and find your way and, in this particularly lucky case, get married to a sweet guy who loves you very much and happens to be smart and cool and knows how to cook and navigate big city traffic with a confidence that I aspire to one day. And while I hope we always keep growing and all that I probably won’t ever outgrow being your goofy big brother. (Final slides) Wishing you both all there is to wish for. ❤️

Western Massachusetts, you’ve got a place in my heart. Maybe tied with Asheville, NC, and Winooski, VT for places that felt like home before they had any reason to. Thank you to these all star players and friends for all their work this past weekend and when it’s time to say more, more will be said. There are lines in these songs about feeling too old, but lemme tell ya I’m starting to feel young again. The hammer felt lighter than air this week back in carpentry world. Like Clay Frankel said that one time I saw @twinpeaksdudes @wakingwindows and the pouring rain cleared up to light clouds and stars in the middle of their set, “music will do that sometimes”.

Getting the whole band together in one place later this week to track some songs and I’m not saying it’ll be a record for people who maybe have some dad stuff and love Springsteen songs in a way that might relate to that stuff…Anyway it’ll be its own thing and I look forward to sharing it one day but in the meantime here’s a Springsteen song about dad stuff.
