15 years of this Beautiful Life. If you know any of Corabelle’s story, you know things haven’t always been easy. But you also know that she is an Overcomer. That she has come back strong after difficult seasons. And that she is continuing to grow, heal, work hard, and move forward towards a full life. Happy Birthday, Beloved. by @erinduplechin

American Christian friends, it’s time to get an education. Most of us have been fed a mix of half-truths and lies in history class. We were taught that America’s history is one of founding fathers filled with faith, that this country offered happiness and freedom for all. We were taught (sometimes explicitly, sometimes implicitly) that God blessed America to be fruitful and multiply- that we were a divinely chosen nation. We were the good guys.

But this is our historic reality: mass genocide, misappropriation of scripture, church partnership in slavery, and unspeakable evil toward black and brown bodies. The American (and Texas for some of us) heroes we were taught to worship were complicit.

We didn’t know. Maybe our teachers didn’t know. But now we have the opportunity to learn the truth- and it’s never too late.

I urge you to start learning again. It won’t be easy. It will make you sick to your stomach. It will bring you to your knees. It will make you question whether you can stay in church. It will make you sob and wonder how humans are capable of such things.

But if we are to “Do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with God,” we must do this hard work (Micah 6:8). by @erinduplechin

The topic of immigration is complex, and complex issues need complex solutions. Conversations around such topics require nuance, curiosity, and the ability to hold multiple things as true. It also begs us to reject the sin of certainty and embrace the reality that we might be wrong.

There is a lot of dialogue regarding love, “toxic empathy,” obeying the government and its leaders, America first, and xenophobia. Some of these conversations are undergirded by fear and the unknown. Some are full of compassion. Some are downright hateful. All of the above have been done in the name of Jesus.

But what does God actually say about how we should treat others? The Legal Literature starts that conversation, and Jesus ends it. We start by loving God with all of ourselves. We also love our neighbors and communities. We are also commanded, multiple times, to love the foreigner. The Israelites knew what it meant to be foreigners, and God demanded they treat foreigners better than they were treated: “You must not mistreat or oppress foreigners in any way. Remember, you yourselves were once foreigners in the land of Egypt.” (Exodus 22:21). Jesus completes our concentric circles when he directs us to love our enemies.

Again, I acknowledge the complexities of this topic. I am unable to offer government-level solutions. But what I do believe is that if you are unmoved by the things that are happening in our midst right now, there is a problem. If you are unmoved by the impact on real, image-bearing humans, there is a problem. If you pledge your allegiance to an earthly government before Jesus, there is a problem.

If loving the foreigner means I am toxically empathetic, then I’ll be toxic. I pledge my allegiance to Jesus. by @erinduplechin

This podcast.

In my youth I was taught that my modesty kept my brothers from sinning. Their purity rested on my shoulders and they couldn’t help but look at my body. I was made to feel shame at having curves because they could make men sin.

In my early married years it was modeled that staying home with my babies was the better way. That I was created to be my husband’s helper (not his equal). That as long as I followed my husband’s lead, God wouldn’t hold it against me in the event that my husband made a mistake. I was to follow him blindly.

When I went to the mission field, it was assumed that I would stay home with my children, home school them, and be a good wife. To be clear, I do not regret those years. My time home with my girls was precious, but my value was often limited to that space.

I am now unlearning so many things. I am realizing that my needs are just as valid as my children’s and my husband’s and if I don’t start seeing it that way, I’m not going to make it. Literally.

I am grateful to have a husband who has always viewed me as his equal. He is always on my side, cheering me on, calling out my gifts, and is never intimidated or insecure when I am put into leadership roles. So many women do not have this.

And do you know who is (at least in part) to blame for this epidemic of patriarchy and misogyny? The church. The church was where I learned these lessons about sexuality and gender roles. The church taught me that every young man had a battle and that I had to help him fight it by covering up my body. When I sought mentorship because I wanted to be a better wife, I was told that I was created to be his helper. That my job was to make my home a sanctuary for him and to agree with him even when I didn’t.

Church, please do better. Please do not teach this unbiblical inequality to my daughters. Please just help us push them towards Jesus where they can learn their true value and worth. by @erinduplechin
