There’s been a name change around here! Disruptive Narratives is now @ErinGreenPhD ✨⁣
⁣
Since 2020, I’ve (inconsistently 🙃) shared my curriculum and teaching work under the name Disruptive Narratives. Disruptive Narratives was rooted in the belief that we must challenge the historical and contemporary stories we take for granted—the ones that tell us change is made by heroic individuals, that the U.S. is always progressing, and that justice work is best left to the grown-ups. I still believe deeply in the need to disrupt these master narratives, and I believe in the power of elementary social studies as the space to do so.⁣
⁣
But justice is also about more than disruption. It’s about care, creativity, and collective growth. It's about sustaining and nurturing the people, communities, and histories we cherish. 🪴🌻⁣
⁣
Over the past five years, I've completed my PhD, become a mother, deepened my understanding of justice-oriented education, and expanded the scope of my focus, both personally and professionally. ⁣
⁣
With this new name, I’m giving myself permission to show up here more fully—as a parent, a partner, a teacher, a writer, a creative, a caregiver. While justice-centered social studies will always be central to this account, and I will continue to highlight my work in teaching and curriculum, I’m excited to expand beyond the parameters I have previously set for myself.⁣
⁣
And let’s be honest— I’ve been dreaming of this handle for years, and I’m proud to claim the credentials I worked so hard to earn. 🥳🎓⁣

At Seeds & Sprouts Play School, we believe there is value in both process art and product art, but we especially treasure the messy, magical process of creating. ✨🎨

Sometimes children follow directions to make a keepsake they’re proud to bring home, but most days, we explore paint with our hands (and sometimes our feet!), mix colors just to see what happens, and fully immerse ourselves in the joy of creative exploration.

Process art invites children to take risks, solve problems, make decisions, and express themselves without worrying about getting it “right.”

Process art nurtures creativity, confidence, sensory exploration, and a willingness to try something new. It often means getting messy, and we think that’s a beautiful and important part of childhood. 🌈🌻🫟

March is Women’s History Month! 💕✨

When your play school teacher is a former teacher educator with a PhD in Curriculum and Instruction, you get not one, but ✨three✨ book displays celebrating the stories of incredible women! 💪🏽👩🏻

This month, we worked toward our Women’s History Reading Challenge and explored the diverse stories of brave women who have made our world a better place.

To kick off our challenge, we read Mae Among the Stars and made our own sky full of stars in celebration of trailblazing astronaut Mae Jemison! ⭐️

2016 was a big year for Ms. Green! In 2016 I was 23 (!!), and it was the end of my first year of teaching and the beginning of my second— two classrooms of fifth graders that I still think about constantly.

In 2016 we dove deep into the election, @newsela and @joesalinasfilms came to film our classroom, Bernie Sanders won my class primary after a strong student-led campaign, Hillary Clinton won the nation-wide student primary, and our work was written up in several news outlets.

I presented at my first social studies conference, my kids did amazing work challenging dominant narratives (a lesson I later wrote about for my first @rethinkingschools article!), and I made all of my fifth graders get on a bus across town so I could fan girl over @kwamealexander and hear him talk about our favorite book.

2016 was a year of big ups and downs. It informed so much of my work as a teacher and solidified my beliefs in the power of young people to advocate for justice in an increasingly unjust world. And also I refuse to believe this was ten years ago 🫣 by @eringreenphd

We often teach young children that Dr. King gave a beautiful speech and changed the world.

We rarely teach them that he was arrested for breaking unfair laws, or that Dr. King set an example for how to continue resisting unjust laws today.

This MLK Day, you don’t have to water down Dr. King’s story. Young children are capable of learning about fairness, injustice, and rule-breaking for justice, and that switch can start as simply as switching out our typical activites on “I Have a Dream” to centering Letter from Birmingham Jail instead.

This resource set includes a teacher guide, child-accessible adapted reading, guided discussion questions, and coloring pages featuring quotes that center Dr. King’s belief in breaking unjust laws.
