I had such a lovely time tonight at @charlevoixlibrary listening to Miles Harvey, author of The King of Confidence: A Tale of Utopian Dreamers, Frontier Schemers, True Believers, False Prophets, and the Murder of an American Monarch.

This somehow non-fiction book tells the story of James Strang, a charismatic 19th-century con man who declared himself a king, established a Mormon kingdom on an island in Lake Michigan after claiming to be the successor of Joseph Smith, served as a member of the Michigan House of Representatives, and was eventually assassinated.

This book is really good non-fiction, if that's your interest, but it's special for me!

For my non-Michiganders: My Michigan home is Charlevoix, and Charlevoix operates the ferry and flights to Beaver Island, the island James Strang colonized for his Mormon kingdom! And years ago, I spent some time on Beaver Island with @deanpsimmer & @dorcasgiles — who actually gave me the book! — so this wild story is close to home!

Hey y’all, in some big ✨personal news✨ I am thrilled to announce that I have accepted the call to serve as Priest-in-Charge at Christ Episcopal Church in Charlevoix, Michigan! 🌊🍒

We had an incredible summer and felt the mutual call to continued ministry. However, in this very unique call, I will be splitting my time between Nashville & Charlevoix!

I’ll visit Charlevoix in autumn, winter, and spring, then I will live in Charlevoix mid-May to mid-September, during the height of their busy season as a coastal city. I’ll be ministering alongside them through seasonal visits, summer months in residence, and remotely!

I’m grateful beyond words for CEC and their willingness to take this big leap in faith, as we all try out something truly new. It’s a beautiful church of faithful people and I’m humbled to be called as their priest.

Escape. That’s what alcohol helps us do. It’s a harmful escape, but it’s an escape nonetheless. That’s just the truth.
