There was something quite special to me about this butterfly that I stumbled upon in Shenandoah.

Perched calmly, almost confidently, on a leaf, slowly fluttering its damaged wings, as though it had accepted its fate and was at peace with the fact that its life was soon going to end.

Maybe it trusted that I wouldn’t hurt it, maybe it didn’t care if I did. I don’t know how much time passed as I took these photos, but my interaction with this butterfly was one of those rare moments that makes the passage of time unimportant, where the present is the only thing that I can fathom as meaningful.

I love the intricacies of biology, and capturing them is something I’ve always felt called to do. I’m so grateful when I’m surprised with an opportunity to appreciate the details of the world, because it certainly isn’t often that we’re struck by such awe that we have no choice but to stop and take a look around to see what beauty might be right in front of us.

#farmtography 🌽

If currency was represented by hours and minutes rather than dollars and cents, how much would an ear of corn cost?

Every time I visit a new farm I’m equally enamored and inspired by what it represents. The amount of time, work, and sacrifice that farmers invest in our food often goes unrecognized, hidden by supermarket packaging and competition with larger scale agricultural companies.

Farming is hard work, and too often is not so lucrative. Yet farmers show up, season after season. Not only does the world depend on their harvests, but also, to them, their work amounts to something more than money - fulfillment, satisfaction, and connection with the earth.

Pretty fuckin awesome. 🙂‍↕️

🧑‍🌾🍅🥬🥕🥒

I started volunteering at @rutgersstudentfarm because I felt a pull towards having a deeper relationship with the food I eat, and strengthening the connections that my community members and I have with the earth.

The more I’ve worked on the farm, the more strongly I’ve felt that this is what I’m meant to do.

My days on the farm begin early in the morning, when the light is warm, the air is quiet, and the grass is wet with dew. My first impression of the day is filled with peace and a great appreciation for nature. I spend hours working alongside my peers who have grown to become my friends, and we laugh, sweat, sing, and share stories about our lives, and recipe ideas for the harvests. I go home tired, sweaty, and most of all, satisfied with the work that I have done. Nothing makes me more content than a day spent farming.

Much of the work that goes into farming often gets overlooked when the food reaches our tables. Hours of planning, seeding, weeding, scouting for pests and disease and managing inevitable outbreaks, lifting heavy bins, washing produce, and what feels like millions of other tiny tasks all have to be done in order to feed our community.

My experiences at the student farm have opened my eyes to what true passion feels like, and what I truly want my future to look like.

I wanted to take some pictures that capture the beauty and efforts behind farm work, I hope they do justice to the time, blood, sweat, and artistry behind it. 😌
