After 1,000 University of California professors called for the reinstatement of SAT/ACT requirements for students applying for STEM majors, a professor gave a glimpse of how bad things are. UC Berkeley math professor Zvezdelina Stankova said in an NPR interview that some engineering students don’t understand how 1/2 + 1/3 = 5/6. Syracuse University Chancellor and President Michael Haynie has announced that the school’s failure to meet enrollment targets has “real financial consequences.” Because of the university’s reliance on undergraduate tuition, the decline in students means a financial deficit. The demographic decline, a fall in international students and more students opting not to pursue a 4-year university degree have all contributed to fewer Syracuse enrollments. With Syracuse tuition at $69,180 a year, not sure things will turn around anytime soon #college #university #highereducation #student #syracuse by @esakismith

Duke University math majors, four years after graduation, earned a median income of just under $300K a year. Carnegie Mellon computer science graduates earned $268K and a variety of CMU engineering graduates drew salaries of $250K. But what about students who don’t have the grades to get into selective schools, don’t want to study STEM or can’t afford high tuition fees? #college #university #student #duke #collegeapps by @esakismith

Cornell banned an a cappella group from campus in 2017 due to its hazing rituals. Cayuga’s Waiters was a singing group that had been at Cornell since 1949. After discovering a 10-year history of hazing, university leaders suspended the group in 2016 and then permanently disbanded it the next year. However, some fraternities that are suspended due to similar - if not worse - hazing activities are reinstated after a fixed period of years. Are punishments proportionate? #college #university #cornell #acappella #student by @esakismith

The crisis at Cornell University is escalating just as the college application cycle kicks into high gear. Back in 2012, the hazing rituals at Dartmouth’s fraternities came into focus after Rolling Stone magazine published an 8K-word exposé on a freshman student’s experiences as a pledge. Applications to Dartmouth fell 14% a year later, with the college president at the time blaming the decline on the school’s reputation for “rowdiness and sexual assault.” Considering Cornell’s significantly more precarious situation, what kind of hit might the university’s applications take? #college #university #student #cornell #collegeapps by @esakismith

Citadel founder Ken Griffin has donated $3 billion to Carnegie Mellon University, the largest ever donation to U.S. higher education. $1 billion will be used to develop and support CMU’s Pittsburgh campus while $2 billion will be earmarked to establish a 35-acre campus in Miami, Florida. With tech and financial services companies expanding operations in South Florida, universities like CMU and Vanderbilt (which is opening a campus in West Palm Beach) see the southern state as attractive to students #college #university #florida #cmu #miami by @esakismith

Chinese President Xi Jinping has invited 100K “Young Americans” to China for exchanges and study programs. This comes as the number of U.S. students studying in China for academic credit remains far below pre-pandemic levels. China’s push for more American students comes as the U.S. tightens visa policies to further limit the flow of international students from countries like China. The contrast in strategies is striking #college #university #internationalstudents #china #studyabroad by @esakismith

Phil Knight, the co-founder of Nike, has donated $1 billion to the University of Oregon, the largest known contribution to a public flagship university. The money will go towards establishing an engineering college, which will take ten years to develop. The university recently announced $65 million in budget cuts due to enrollment declines and financial challenges. Knight’s donation couldn’t have come at a better time #college #university #highereducation #oregon #nike by @esakismith

A Cornell faculty task force has produced a 200-page report articulating the reasons why higher education is in its current crisis state. High tuition fees, the erosion of the relationship between universities and the federal government, the impact of AI on jobs and learning and growing public distrust of the value of a degree are among the primary factors contributing to today’s challenges. As the all-in yearly cost to attend Cornell nears $100K, will the school truly do something to address these problems? #college #university #highereducation #student #cornell by @esakismith

George Washington University enrolled 1K fewer international students this fall, and is reporting an overall enrollment decrease of 6.7%. Volatile visa policies, the demographic decline and the discontinuation of Grad PLUS loans have all contributed to this fall, according to university leadership. Also important to note that undergraduate tuition alone is $72K a year #college #university #highereducation #student #internationalstudents by @esakismith
