We’re not just dreaming of what the industry could be like. We’re building it in real time. You’re dreaming of where you could be, what you could create with the right push. Let’s make it a reality. Choose to stray.

Every story starts somewhere. On Stray, it starts with you. Your response is the Signal that moves a filmmaker up a tier. Choose to stray #indiefilm #indiefilmmakers #choosetostray #straycompany

The shot didn’t go as planned but the message still stands.

We’re tired of redos and sequels. We want what’s next. Could it be you? 👀 We’re looking to find out. (link in bio)

To the dreamers still staring and to the storytellers brave enough to Stray:

They raised their gates on borrowed reputation,
Hung velvet ropes around the promised land.
But no lock ever caged an open nation,
No fence grows taller than a dream that’s planned.

We do not wait for someone’s invitation,
We hunt the alleys they refuse to walk,
We turn their scraps into a celebration,
Their silence into hunger, into talk.

Feral, but loyal to the pack that’s choosing
To build its own road where no signs are laid.
Let them keep score on all the doors we’re losing,
A stray was born to walk the road it’s made.

So let them guard their gilded reputation.
We’ll be the ones still running, still unbound.
A stray don’t ask for someone’s approbation,
A stray turns silence into hunting ground.

I refuse to be limited. My thoughts when deciding to leave grad school and fix a gap I saw in the industry. There has to be a better way. There wasn’t, so I put a team together and built one. Fast forward through incumbents, hella no’s and those too comfortable to see the future.

And Stray just sponsored @surroundedxwater Surrounded by Stories showcase. Was a blessing to meet the fellows, give grants, and watch beautiful work, and feel the warmth of community.

We’re still going, growing, and still have so much to do. When others, when the industry, when nay sayers think they know your path. Prove them wrong by designing your own. Choose to stray.

Thanks again to the @surroundedxwater team.

Duality of a Stray.

It’s been a pleasure meeting so many of New York’s black professionals. Expanding connections and shining together. Thanks @clockout.app for providing the ecosystem. And thanks @blackprofessionalsnyc for always being the best host.

I look forward to everything you all will do.

No more bothering me about not having photos up. 😅 by @esaugreene

Not every story is meant to fit the mold.

We’re searching for the filmmakers who take risks. The creators with something to say. The community no one saw coming. The Strays who make their own path.

Think your story belongs here? Join us and help us find the others.

Follow the search. Share the movement. Submit your work.

Choose to Stray.

To be eligible for the grant join our site, watch and engage with the films currently on Stray. The people with the most engagement will be considered for the grant!

Proof of life.

In the last year alone, I’ve been to 4 new countries, spent 42+ hours awake more times than I’d like to admit, and gone from stages, sets, and readings straight to buses, trains, and planes. I’ve bounced between film festivals, tech weeks, pitches, and thousands of conversations.

I’ve lost family members, drifted from friends, disappointed people I care about, and struggled to show up for my village the way I wanted to. I’ve missed birthdays, calls, and moments that matter while trying to juggle family, work, art, and business.

I’ve turned down opportunities that would make most people’s heads spin. I’ve welcomed new additions to the family, celebrated the unions of friends, witnessed work I can only describe as ethereal, and had the privilege of pouring into young men who reminded me of myself when I was still figuring out who I could become.

I’ve lost more than I’ve won. Been embarrassed more times than I can count. But those few wins have changed everything.

Most of all, I’ve been blessed with a team I can lean on, friends whose support can’t be measured, and rooms full of people far smarter and more capable than me.

The journey is still just beginning. I’ve given my life to something that is quite literally a testament to my beliefs and my legacy. Excited for the stories, partnerships, and milestones ahead.

I’m grateful I chose to Stray I hope you make that choice as well one day. by @esaugreene

Thank you for those that helped impact this chapter of my life and thank you for those that will be involved within the next one.

As I reflect on who I was and who I am now, I can’t help but be ecstatic and humbled. It’s no coincidence that graduation fell on Mother’s Day and I know you’re up there smiling down on the man I’m becoming ma. Thank you all and I love all of you. by @esaugreene
