As summer gives way to autumn, Joshua Tree swings back into high season — boasting hot-but-comfortable conditions during the day, perfect sunset temps, and chilly, starry nights. ✨

As part time desert dwellers with some authority — and strong opinions — we prefer the bookends of high seasons. Visit Joshua Tree during the hotter ends of either high season (like May and October) where days can be spent by the pool, while dedicating mornings and evenings to hikes.

Whatever your seasonal preference, we’re here to help take your desert getaway to the next level 🌵 At the link in bio, we’ve compiled a list of vacation rentals whose pools are so drool-worthy you may not make it out of the house at all.

As the wildflowers begin to bloom in California, we’ve got our eyes on @cuyamabuckhorn and the Carrizo Plain National Monument— 125 miles from Los Angeles 🌼🌸🌾

This lovingly restored roadside resort in Santa Barbara’s high desert is in the heart of the Cuyama Valley, whose #CarrizoPlains National Monument bursts into color during spring superblooms.

One of the best kept secrets in California, Carrizo Plains National Monument is home to trails, wildlife, and vast open grasslands ringed by mountains. After a day exploring the colorful landscape, relax in the pool, grab dinner at Buckhorn’s farm-to-table restaurant and bar, sit by the fire, or stargaze from the jacuzzi.

〰️🔗 See our full feature on the hotel, plus our guide to the area, at the link in bio. 🔗〰️

Weekend vibes c/o @StayWyldHomes, a desert oasis in Yucca Valley, CA 🌵

Inside this two bedroom #Airbnb, the uniquely hand-crafted space takes inspiration from the details of the desert, with neutral tones, natural stone tiles and roman clay walls.

Outside, spend your days cooling down in the water, or relaxing with a book on a daybed underneath a pergola. In the evening, take in the colorful desert sunsets while winding down your day in the spa with a glass of wine. Nights are best spent gathered around the fire pit and gaze while stargazing.

Check out the link to book in our bio, along with the Escape LA Guide to Joshua Tree — created by local designers for like-minded, creative travelers.

Add to your bucket list: sunset at the Cholla Cactus Garden, Joshua Tree National Park 🌵🌅

A sight to see any time of day — but right before sunset, in the day’s late golden light, nearly 10 acres of the cacti glow when the low sun hits their spikes.

Weekend vibes ✨🌊 Suspended bed at architect Mickey Muennig — “the man who built Big Sur” — at his Big Sur, CA home.

Originally from Joplin, Missouri, Mickey Muennig graduated in 1959 from the University of Oklahoma, where he studied under pioneering architect Bruce Goff. He moved to Big Sur, California, in 1971 and quickly became acclaimed for his eco-forward designs. 🌿

Hot tip 🔥: March in Death Valley National Park is one of the best months to visit all year, with daily temps reaching mid-70’s to low-80’s. Not too hot, not too cold… and pretty unlikely to rain.

Use the Escape LA guide to plan a 2-3 night trip through America’s largest state park in the contiguous 48 states. 🚐✨🏜️ Your journey begins on the west park entrance coming from LA, stopping at a waterfall before descending into the heart of the park — where dozens of hiking trails, endless scenery and even a temporary lake await visitors.

We’ve updated all our recommendations for spring, including our favorite hikes and outdoor activities — plus where to eat, stay, and things to see along the way.

🏜️🔗 Check it out at the link in bio! 🔗🏜️

This is no ordinary lake — this is “Lake Manly” in Death Valley, making a rare appearance at the hottest place on planet Earth. 🏜️

Last week, Escape LA photographer Erin Lindsey took a roadtrip to see Lake Manly, which formed a few weeks after Hurricane Hillary brought record torrential rains and flooding to the area.

Visitors could be seen frolicking in the water, setting up lawn chairs to watch the sunset over the water (man, we wish we’d thought of that) — while other determined souls battled wind to try their hand at kayaking, canoe and SUP in Manly’s shallow waters. 🛶

With rising temperatures — it is the hottest place on earth, after all — Lake Manly is quickly drying up. Sadly, it’s officially closed for boating, but it’s not too late to see it!

Artist highlight: introducing Sean W. Spellman (@seanwspellman) — a multi-disciplinary artist from Westerly, RI whose work can be viewed currently in both the high and low deserts of Southern California. 🌵☀️

Inspired by the Mojave, the neutral palettes and monumental shapes of the desert have long served as a formative backdrop and a recurring theme in Spellman’s minimalist work — informing his approach to living and creating, from music to visual art.

In Palm Springs, visitors at @drift.hotels can marvel at his murals, displayed throughout the entire boutique hotel and restaurant. In 2023, Spellman was given artistic free reign at Drift, which resulted in over two dozen mural vignettes throughout the property. He also painted a large canvas piece that hangs in their restaurant, Maleza.

Meanwhile, up in the high desert near Joshua Tree, Spellman’s work can currently be seen at @compoundyv. Each of the 12 collages and 12 paintings on view at this new high desert gallery are available for sale (or lease-to-own) as of March 31, the closing of the show.

More info on the show, including hours and purchase information, at the link in @compundyv bio.
