For those of you not fortunate enough to live in New England, let me orient (not orientate, for chrissake) you to the vocabulary and the obsession of LEAF PEEPING!

Yes, 'Peepers' are folks who leave the comfort and convenience of their homes to stare at leaves in September and October. In Northern New England, this is one of our biggest tourist (or 'folks from away') season.

Every few days, we will eagerly check the 'foliage report,' like the one shown here from Yankee magazine.

Here in Southern Maine, our grown children who have foolishly left the 'boring nowheresville' of home for larger and louder cities south of here, will make plans to come visit on Indigenous People's Day weekend to see the glory of leaves. They will keep fingers and toes crossed that the leaves will not have been blown off by a nor'easter nor that they will have peaked early.

“Most people probably think sea stars don’t do anything, [that] they just sit there,” says Jason Hodin, the scientist who raised these stars in his lab. “That is not what sunflower stars are like—they are extremely active. They’re one of the fastest sea stars on the planet,” he says, “and they’re a lot more charismatic than you might normally give [them] credit for.”

I love sea stars, almost as much as I love the octopuses I write about in my novel. And these seastars might just be able to save the Pacific Northwest kelp forests that have been devastated by sea urchins.
