Most of us turn on the tap and never think twice. But here in the Coachella Valley, almost none of our water comes from a lake or a river you can see. It comes from underground, soaked into dirt and rock beneath our feet like water in a sponge. We pump it up with wells.

Think of it like a savings account buried in the ground. Rain and mountain runoff make the deposits. Every shower, every load of laundry, every yard we water is a withdrawal. Take out more than goes in, and the account shrinks.

Our slice of that account in Sky Valley has a name: the Mission Creek Subbasin. And here is a tidbit most people do not know. Ours is boxed in. Underground faults act like walls, wrapping around our water and mostly keeping it from mixing with the rest of the valleys next door. Most places share one big pool. We are more like our own small tank with walls around it. When our water drops, help does not just flow in from next door. We mostly have what we have.

A small, walled-off tank that fills slowly and empties fast. That is our water. Worth knowing before anyone makes big decisions about it. Additional fact: if a "closed loop" data center system were to come to DHS like was planned in Coachella it would take 150% of the whole basin service areas yearly use just for that one thing..........
