What happens when cartographic precision meets mountain adventure? ๐Ÿ”๏ธ

Crow Pass showcases Alaska's iconic 22.6-mile backcountry route with stunning shaded relief, detailed terrain visualization, hydrology, peak labels, mileage markers, and an elevation profile.

The result is a map that does more than guide a journey. It tells a story of the landscape itself, demonstrating how GIS and cartography can turn spatial data into a compelling visual experience.

Which detail catches your eye first? ๐Ÿ‘€

Predicting flooding is complicated. To help communities better prepare for extreme weather, @NOAAโ€™s National Water Center developed a first-of-its-kind high resolution flood prediction service that combines streamflow forecasts and elevation data. See where flooding may occur and what could be impacted with the ready-to-use models in ArcGIS Living Atlas. Link in bio. by @esrigram

If you attended the 2026 Esri User Conference, you may have spotted several animated globes across the Plenary stage and Map Gallery. These visualizations were created in ArcGIS Pro using ERA5 climate reanalysis data.ย

This animation shows land surface temperature, revealing how heat is distributed across Earthโ€™s landscapes and changes over time.

Every animation begins with the data. For this project, hourly ERA5 datasets from August and September 2017 were brought into ArcGIS Pro as multidimensional raster layers.

ย Here, total column water visualizes moisture throughout the atmosphere, making it possible to see weather systems and atmospheric rivers moving across the Americas.

Once the data is loaded, styling helps tell the story. Custom color ramps, transparency, and multidimensional hillshades were used to highlight meaningful patterns in the atmosphere.ย

On a global scale, total column water reveals the continuous movement of moisture around the planet and the interconnected nature of Earthโ€™s water cycle.

The final step is animation. Using ArcGIS Pro animation tools, these datasets were transformed into spinning globes that reveal Earthโ€™s systems in motion.ย

This volumetric soil water animation shows moisture stored in the ground, helping visualize a key part of the water cycle that supports ecosystems, agriculture, and freshwater resources. Explore the full workflow in The Pulse of the Planet, linked in our bio. by @esrigram

Protecting biodiversity starts with understanding where it matters most.
ย
The enhanced Global Hexagons for Biodiversity and Conservation layer in ArcGIS Living Atlas helps answer that question with over 80 biodiversity and conservation metrics that can be analyzed in minutes. This bivariate map combines areas that are already protected with areas with a high priority for protection.
ย
Explore species richness, protected areas, ecosystems, land use, and more to better understand where conservation action can make the biggest impact. Link in bio.

This map uses a custom index to rank hexagon areas on their relative priority for new conservation, based on low population, low existing protection, high species richness, and high carbon storage.

This map displays the average number of threatened species (amphibians, birds, mammals and reptiles) per 900 sq km in each hexagon. Emphasis is given to hexagons with a low percentage of protection. by @esrigram

What if a map could help fix dropped calls? ๐Ÿ“ž

The City of Rancho Mirage uses GIS to identify wireless coverage gaps, visualize signal strength, and create a data-driven plan for improving connectivity across the city. By mapping what residents actually experience, the city is helping improve coverage where it matters most.

Over the past few years, collar data has been used extensively to better understand and communicate the movements of the migratory antelope in South Sudan.

For the map Lines of Life, the data was approached from a different perspective. Rather than creating another informative map, the thousands of animal movements were transformed into an artistic representation, highlighting the beauty and complexity of the migration.

The map was submitted to the 2026 Esri Map Gallery, where it received two awards: Artistic and the ICA-IMIA Recognition of Excellence in Cartography.

Behind the artistic representation, the collar data has a very practical purpose. It helps understand migration corridors, movement patterns and threats, and identify where conservation action and land use planning are most needed.

We are very grateful to be part of Esriโ€™s nonprofit program, which gives African Parks access to powerful software and tools used daily to turn complex information into maps that are accessible, meaningful and useful for conservation. @esrigram #LinesofLife #SouthSudan #GreatNileMigration #GIS #GISforConservation

Who says basemaps have to stay flat? In his latest blog, @johnmnelson shows how to use AI to generate a repeating texture pattern, then bring it into a basemap using the Vector Tile Style Editor. Think dappled sunlit water, sandy beach terrain, even a Van Gogh inspired world map.
