Counting Sheep

Counting Sheep explores how burial can reconnect us with local landscapes and natural cycles. The project transforms discarded wool from sheep that maintain cemetery grounds through grazing into a soft, felted coffin.

Proposing a bioregional burial system, it connects shepherds, craftspeople and funeral practices. Through material research and design, it brings care for the deceased into dialogue with care for animals, soil and the people who sustain the landscape.

FinalForm.stl is a fully customizable, 3D-printed coffin designed to accommodate different body sizes, responding to the growing demand for larger coffins. Additive manufacturing enables personalized ornamentation while integrating handles and connections directly into the print, reducing additional components and material use. The prototype is made from econitWood, a wood-based material using recycled sawdust. Looking ahead, the project explores how new material compositions could be developed and adapted to different burial practices, local soil conditions and ecological needs—rethinking the coffin as part of the cycle it eventually returns to ⚰️

The new resident at @circolodeldesign is Esmée Willemsen @esschmitty ✨

For the third edition of the international residency programme Earthrise – Design for a Living Planet, Esmee will develop a research project focused on clay-based materials, exploring them as cultural, environmental and narrative resources.

During the residency, she will connect with designers and experts based in Torino. Over the coming months, we will follow her visits, exchanges and material experiments as the research develops.

In December, at the end of her residency, Esmée’s final project will become part of “Earthrise 26 – From the Ground”, the exhibition dedicated to clay opening at Circolo del Design on 14 October.

The residency is developed with the support of two international partners @designregiok and @base_milano

We are excited to present to you the project „FinalForm.stl“ by @esschmitty which will be part of the find attached exhibition during @currents.berlin

FinalForm.stl is a fully customizable, 3D-printed coffin designed to accommodate all body sizes, meeting the increasing demand for larger coffins. Using additive manufacturing, it allows for personalized ornamentation, while the eco-friendly econitWood material eliminates the need for screws and handles, streamlining production and minimizing environmental impact. This innovative material adapts to various burial traditions and soil conditions, promoting natural decomposition and reducing resource consumption.

We traded our art with each other.
I fell in love with @esschmitty ’s beautiful pewter work. I absolutely adore this little peanut-shaped pendant. My cat’s name is Peanut, so it already felt special to me.

Later, Esmee told me that “peanut” is a term connected to the Dutch Indonesian community and the inspiration behind this piece. I love that this pendant carries such a personal history while also becoming something personal to me.
