DOMESTICATION SYNDROME Curated by @amalyamegerman Capitalism domesticates everyone within it who isn’t a power-broker. When animals are domesticated, they exhibit a consistent set of traits: white spots, floppy ears, reduced aggression response, smaller jaws, brains, and snouts. In becoming a more “useful” animal whose every trait is molded to suit human needs, they become more dependent and infantilized. We tend to think of domestication as a process humans impose on animals to make them more useful to us, but what we often miss is how through capitalism, those of us without power are undergoing a “domestication” of sorts ourselves. Together the works presented in Domestication Syndrome speak to how our bodies, minds and behaviors are atomized, essentialized, and manipulated, often painfully, for exploitation. We are de-fanged, our freedoms limited, our identities and communities fractured, and our abilities to amass political power hindered. We can’t thank everyone enough for their support over the course of this incredible exhibition, and for joining us at the closing reception this past Sunday. “Pushing the Frame: Willful Transgressions” will have its final day on view tomorrow! The energy from Annabel Turrado’s performance of “Raspado (Abolir ICE / Abolish ICE)” continues to reverberate throughout our community, and the chorus of resistance continues to grow. Thank you to those who were also able to donate to the Immigrant Defense Fund, run by the National Day Laborer Organizing Network. The resources and activations we have brought together these past several weeks have been both inspiring and directly impactful. We are excited to invite you to a very special closing reception for “Pushing the Frame: Willful Transgressions,” featuring a commissioned performance by Annabel Turrado of “Raspado (Abolir ICE/Abolish ICE)” at Westlab + Gallery. This performance will culminate our thirty-two artist group exhibition which has brought together critical voices across geographies, generations, materials, and media. In its two month duration, this show has asserted a chorus of resistance to generate dialogue and gather resources towards supporting communities in need. As protections for our precious communities disintegrate, we will continue to reinforce them. Annabel Turrado (she, her, ella, b. Glendale, CA) will be joining us from Los Angeles to enact a physical translation of abolishing ICE, during which she scrapes away at a 50+lb block of ice for nearly three hours. A painfully clairvoyant work, this piece was first performed in 2021 in response ICE’s violence against children and families, particularly impacting Latinx communities, atrocities which have become dramatically more pervasive under the current administration. Turrado’s piece was also featured in the MexiCali Biennial in 2023. Staging this piece in a new context, “Raspado (Abolir ICE / Abolish ICE),” grows the call against the despotic organization into a bicoastal stand, bridging two significant cities that would not exist without their critical Latinx communities: LA and NYC. I’m performing. I’m performing for myself. Most of my performances are devoted to themes and people that I believe in and love dearly. And all my pieces take months of preparation. I will never not do that, but this time I’m straying a bit and devoting this impromptu piece to myself. This one is for me, although I hope it will resonate with many. LIGHTHEARTED is a 4 hour #durationalperformance dedicated to letting go of the weight of the past sixteen year karmic cycle, doubling as an end of year release to cleanse the self of 2024 in order to renew and be ready for what’s to come in the new year. The United Farm Workers marched for 24 days from San Diego to Sacramento to pressure Gavin Newsom to sign a bill that would make it easier for farmworkers to vote in union elections. My video work, Raspado (1 in a series of 4), that I created for @yellowfishfestival is now installed and will be on view @thefrontartecultura from March 5-May 7 for Casa Familiar’s 15th Annual Día de la Mujer art exhibition, Art Is An Action - Amor En Los Tiempos De Pandemia. Also, today marks the year anniversary of my last day in the residency phase for Yellow Fish. #feelinggrateful North - Raspado (Abolish ICE/Abolir ICE) For the duration of 210 minutes, using a raspador, a tool used to make Mexican style snow cones called raspados, I scrape away at a 50lb block of ice. This is my literal translation of abolishing ICE, the system that has affected many Latinx communities. This piece was done as a response to the inhumane actions Immigration and Customs Enforcement has carried out on people, especially children.
