Another sneak peak at this year’s A History of Clay! Our very own Ester Kwon, beloved teacher and studio manager at Gasworks, will be teaching a class on the history of Korean ceramics. She will show these three pieces and discuss the changing hands of authorship in Korea and the broader ceramics world. Classes begin Oct 18 and you can register at the link in bio!

Ewer: This gourd-shaped ewer well encapsulates the elegance and pristine quality of the celadon wares that defined the Goryeo dynasty.

Buncheong: This bowl dates back to the Joseon Dynasty, a period lasting between 1392 - 1910 in Korea’s history. It shows the aesthetic turn from highly refined celadon-wares to an approach embracing imperfection, movement, and spontaneity.

Moon: This jar is dated to the 18th century, belonging to a late pottery movement of the Joseon dynasty. The form was produced by attaching two hemispherical pieces of clay in the middle, a technique popularized and most widely attributed to the moon jar. The cobalt blue motifs on the surface speak to influences and trends from neighboring regions. taken in Gasworks NYC by @esterkwonester

last month i spent a week and half learning how to build a catenary arch kiln at @watershedceramics with the expert guidance of @tylergulden and @chouinard.ceramics. our team loaded and fired the kiln shortly after and the resulting surfaces were soft and oh so subtle… but still dynamic!

this pot is one of my favorites from that firing. white rose clay with penn state shino as a liner on the inside.

also some snippets of building, firing, kiln-side oyster shucking, animal friends, and an inspiring studio visit. taken in Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts by @esterkwonester
