📢 Education without fear: Standing with Belarusian students in exile in Lithuania

Following the designation of the European Humanities University (EHU) as an “extremist organisation” by Belarusian authorities, Belarusian students and academic staff face growing concerns over their safety, academic freedom and ability to continue their education.

Even in exile, students encounter administrative, financial and citizenship-based barriers to accessing higher education in Lithuania.

Together with the Belarusian Students’ Association (BSA) @zbsunion and the Lithuanian National Students’ Union (LSS) @lietuvosstudentusajunga , the European Students’ Union (ESU) @esu.online calls for concrete measures to protect students’ rights and ensure safe, accessible pathways to education.

🤝 Political repression must never determine who gets to learn, teach or pursue an academic future.

🧠 Mental health matters — in higher education and beyond.

University life can be rewarding, but it can also bring academic pressure, financial worries, uncertainty and isolation. And when students struggle, the answer cannot simply be to tell them to cope better.

Mental well-being is also shaped by the environments in which we study, the support we can access and whether we feel safe, included and heard.

Universities have a responsibility to make well-being part of everyday campus life, not just something addressed when a crisis occurs.

At ESU, we believe student well-being must be part of the conversation about students' rights and the future of higher education.

Through the MindED Pathways project, we are working alongside partners to support a more holistic approach to mental health in higher education.

This World Mental Health Day, let's move beyond awareness and work towards learning environments where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

We’re running. 🗳️

Together with the European Students’ Union, I’m a candidate for Vice-President of the European Youth Forum.

🏠 Housing we can’t afford
💼 Jobs that don’t pay
📈 A cost of living that keeps rising
🌍 A climate crisis we’ll inherit
🗳️ Democracies under pressure
🎓 Education getting harder to reach

The Forum turns 30, let’s make it new again!

On October 8th, students across the USA are walking out of class, demanding universities to protect students, not reputations.

ESU stands in solidarity with students affected by sexual violence worldwide. The case at Cornell University is outrageous. Students must be protected, and universities must put students’ safety and wellbeing first.

Sexual violence is a reality on campuses. But it should never be treated as something students simply have to accept as part of university life.

Prevention starts with creating a culture where consent is understood, boundaries are respected and harmful behaviour is challenged. It also means making sure students know where they can turn for support, and that those who experience sexual violence are listened to and taken seriously.

Importantly, preventing sexual violence should never mean putting the responsibility on students to avoid being assaulted. The responsibility lies with the person who causes harm.

Universities have a responsibility to create environments where students can study, socialise and live without fear of sexual violence.

Sexual violence is not inevitable. It is preventable. And safer campuses are possible.

On October 8, we stand with students and survivors and call for educational institutions to take responsibility for creating safe and supportive campuses.

Students must be heard. Education must be funded. 🇫🇷

ESU and @la_fage stand in solidarity with students and young people mobilising across France for adequately funded education, decent study conditions and a future where everyone can access quality education.

The scale of the mobilisation shows that these demands cannot be ignored. Students are demanding investment in education, support with the cost of living and a real say in the decisions that shape their futures.

We are also deeply concerned by the growing number of injuries and arrests linked to the protests. The right to peaceful protest must be protected, and the use of force must always be necessary, proportionate and aimed at minimising harm.

Students are not a problem to be managed. They are legitimate partners in shaping education and society.

Listen to students. Protect the right to protest. Fund education.

🇨🇭🇪🇺 Switzerland takes an important step towards Erasmus+!The European Students’ Union welcomes the Swiss Senate’s approval of the budget for Switzerland’s participation in Erasmus+ in 2027.

This is an important step towards Switzerland returning to the Erasmus+ programme and strengthening opportunities for students and young people to study, train and connect across Europe. 🎓

🌍We look forward to welcoming Switzerland back to Erasmus+ and to seeing student mobility between Switzerland and Europe grow once again.

We also thank @vss_unes_usu for their tireless work and advocacy in pushing for Switzerland’s return to Erasmus+ and standing up for students’ right to international mobility.

Congratulations to Switzerland, and a huge congratulations to VSS-UNES-USU! 👏 One step closer to bringing Switzerland back to Erasmus+! 🇨🇭🇪🇺

Fundamental values are not optional.
A university is more than a building where degrees are awarded. It is a place where students must be free to learn, question, debate, organise and express themselves.

The State of Belarusian Academia report documents a higher education system where students and academics face political repression, ideological indoctrination, militarisation and restrictions on educational mobility.

This is what happens when fundamental values are replaced by political control.

ESU stands with Belarusian students, academics and the right to education without political coercion.

🌍 Making Alliances Inclusive for Every Student — a hybrid event on October 21, 2026!

Whether you’re a student or staff member engaged in European University Alliances, or simply interested in student participation and inclusion, this event is for you.

📍 Online or in person in Bilbao? You choose!

☀️ Morning session — online-friendly
The morning takes a more informative approach, sharing relevant insights and perspectives on inclusion and student participation. It’s an ideal option if you’re involved in this work but can’t travel to Bilbao.

🤝 Afternoon session — in person
The afternoon takes a more practical approach, creating space for deeper discussions and the trust-building that happens through face-to-face exchange. If you’re able to attend in person, check whether your home institution or Alliance can support costs related to participation, including travel and accommodation.

The on-site event in Bilbao is organised by @munibertsitatea ( @eu4dual_ambassadors Alliance partner) and the European Students’ Union (ESU), together with their partners in the INST.ALL project.

💡 What is INST.ALL?
INST.ALL (Inclusivity for Students in Alliances) is a two-year project bringing together student organisations, higher education institutions and European stakeholders to explore how the Social Dimension is reflected within European University Alliances — and what barriers may still limit meaningful student participation.

✨ Interested?
Find the registration link in our bio and on the INST.ALL project page at esu-online.org.

We warmly welcome participants both online and in person. See you on October 21! by @esu.online

Today, 28 September, is the International Day for Universal Access to Information.

Access to information means more than having information available. It means being able to find it, understand it, and use it to make sense of what is happening around us, including when students come together to demand change.

That is why today, we are making our Student Protests Monitoring reports more accessible.

Our fourth Student Protests Monitoring recorded 54 student protest actions across 22 countries between 16 March and 16 May 2026, the highest number recorded in a single monitoring period so far.

Students mobilised around university governance, access to education, funding and living conditions, democracy and accountability, human rights, and international solidarity.

Behind every number are students raising their voices, demanding change, and defending their rights.

Making this information accessible allows us to see these patterns, understand these demands, and follow what is happening across Europe.

Today, we are launching a dedicated section on the ESU website, where you can access this report and where our upcoming Student Protests Monitoring reports will be published.

Because student voices, their demands, and the realities they are responding to should be visible and accessible to everyone.

🌍 What is INST.ALL?

INST.ALL – Inclusivity for Students in Alliances is a two-year project bringing together student organisations, higher education institutions and European stakeholders to explore how the Social Dimension is reflected in European University Alliances — and what barriers may still limit meaningful student participation.

🤝 What happened at the workshop?

Building on findings and good practices identified earlier in the project, the workshop brought together student representatives and staff from across Alliances to exchange experiences, benchmark existing practices and jointly explore ways to strengthen the Social Dimension.

Through small-group discussions, participants reflected on:
✨ What works — and why
✨ What conditions are needed for successful implementation
✨ What challenges can arise
✨ Which practices could be adapted to other Alliances and institutions

📢 Want to learn more?

Follow ESU and the INST.ALL project for upcoming benchmarking and capacity-building opportunities supporting student inclusion!
