i hope dead people are free of social media… but in remembrance of my Uncle Marion Pawlowski who past last saturday after 95 mostly joyful years. i feel lucky to have spent some of that joyful time with you (and some of the hard times too). You were kind, funny and always interested in what was going on with me. just a month ago at Off the Rak in Ebensburg, you handed me a slip of paper with the word “gentrification” hand-written on it, and said, “what is that?” I guess that’s a not a word that comes up much in nicktown (pop. 982, i checked). You had me busy explaining through lunch. i was so busy explaining, i now regret not asking you why you asked me that. you lived a big life, shared so generously of yourself with all of us. we will all miss seeing you in person, but you’ll always be with us. sounds cliche but true. please have a delicious blue cocktail with Aunt Arlene for all of us still in this realm. by @ethaddeus

Kelly and I saw this incredible sunset tonight as a storm moved off toward the horizon. I thought just then about all the tributes to fathers I saw over the weekend, and how much of a force of nature my father has been in my life, my first measure of all things. It’s been a hard year, but one of brightest memories will remain riding around Western Pennsylvania with my 90 year old father at the wheel, looking at the shells of old industry and the beginning of new things, sharing memories and observations. My father has lighted my way my whole life, but somehow even brighter this last year. by @ethaddeus

I went to Javitz for the first dose of vaccine today. There were thousands of people there but it was so well run, orderly and professional, even compassionate. Then I walked through the mediocre, flashy, empty, jagged glass mess of Hudson Yards to see the new Moynihan Train Station. I worked on versions 127-324 of rebuilding Penn Station from 2007-2012. This is version 500-something, and it’s wonderful. It’s welcoming and grand and civic and shows that we can make nice things for everyone. We can do big things. We can have a green new deal in this country. I love NY, the future starts here. taken in Moynihan Train Hall at New York Penn Station by @ethaddeus

Difficult to describe our week in Beira Mozambique, working with students from UniZambezi to imagine a more resilient future for this city that was battered by Cyclone Idai last year. We learned a lot but I was most impressed with the seamless collaboration between our students which gives me hope for our world in crisis by @ethaddeus
