Baxter passed a few days ago.

We grew up together. He bore witness to my becoming, through all the strange, uneven years of it, and I to his. He was there for heartbreaks, for sneaky less-than-sober nights, for long afternoons upping our mileage on the trails. Our shared youths passed in the blink of an eye, and I cherish every moment of it.

Bax was a sensitive soul. Skittish, yes the kind of dog who could read a room before anyone else in it. If something in you shifted, he knew. A quiet nudge of the hand. A look that said I’m here. He worried easily. His body failed him more than it should have. But he was braver than anyone gave him credit for. And I know in the end, he faced it that way too.

I also know I single handedly gave Baxter one of the most refined pallets surely any dog has ever known. Years of slipping him scraps even turned him into a bit of a snob, an inevitable side effect of far too many filet mignon tastings.

Unfortunately, I didn’t get a proper goodbye.
But over the years I got used to leaving him with the same words:

Love you, B. I’ll see you soon.

Wherever I lived: dorms, apartments, flats, there was always a Polaroid of him somewhere nearby. Taped to a wall, tucked on a shelf. A small piece of home. A reminder to stay just as curious in the world as he did with that classic tilt of his head.

To everyone who knew Baxter over the years,
whether he greeted you with a bark at the door,
a lick at a party,
or a proud little shake for a treat,

thank you for being part of his world.

My quiet confidant.
My only rival in hair.
My best friend. My brother.
