I was reminded of the power of magic at a recent event where I performed not only across generations, but across languages too. Although I took 8 years of Spanish from middle school to college, solomente recuerdo un poco.

At this event, I was asked to perform for a couple through a translator. Even though we could not connect through language, we connected over the cards. It was one of my favorite sets of the night.

Thrilled to bring family and friends together for Becca's 40th. Guests of all ages gathered for the show. After, everyone came up in small groups to chat and experience one of my favorite interactive illusions. It was a great group, and I had such a fun time performing for them.

There's a saying, "Magicians guard an empty safe"

The idea is: true Magic doesn't depend on a device, a "trick deck" or somesuch. Don't get me wrong, that doesn't mean I WON'T use a trick deck. It means that if you were to unlock the real secrets, the true gems...
You would find maybe a piece of thread, a rubber band, nothing consequential.

Because the real Magic isn't IN the devices, it's the way the devices are USED. It's the way the devices are NOT used.

Let me give you an example: a little while ago I needed $5 to get free shipping on Amazon. So I found a little $5 magic trick to buy, assuming I knew what the device was. When it showed up, I was mostly correct about what it was, so I practiced it a bit, and created a little Magic moment for someone.

But here's the thing: the instructions that were provided with the device were completely wrong. You could go on Amazon and buy this trick, and I guarantee that without proper instruction, you would not be able to fool people with it. I don't even remember where I learned the correct way to perform this trick. But presented with just the materials provided by Amazon, it would have been an impossible task.

Real Magic isn't a device. It's a behavior.

What does this mean for you? It means you need nothing to experience real Magic🪄
If real Magic is a behavior, it's accessible to anyone. You just need time to stop and admire the flowers🪻🌌

🌌THE PRACTICAL PERSON'S PRIMER TO REACHING OUT TO THE UNIVERSE PT. II🌌

Hello again. Welcome back. Let's finish this "Primer" by looking at how we can extend our hands out to The Universe.

I concluded last time by saying that real Magic comes from recognizing The Reach of the Universe and grabbing hold. So how do you make that choice to grasp? Unfortunately there is no simple answer to this. I think of it like the "yes, and" rule in improv. The best way to explain is to create a situation based on an example I mentioned in Pt. I

So let's say you have a card trick planned, then someone picks out a card and says "this is the card I was thinking of!"
If you choose to say "Cool. Now let me show you this trick I have planned." You have chosen to deny The Universe. You've said no.
If you choose instead to say, "I had a feeling." You've created a true Magical moment. You've "yes, and"-ed The Universe🌌

Notice that choosing Magic required a quickness on the feet. Abandoning of a plan. A new direction. Choosing your words carefully.

In my lexicon, this is what I call extending your hand to The Universe. Mindfulness. Focus. Awareness. Wit. Staying present. Listening closely. Quick thinking.

The more you can live with your hand extended to The Universe, the more Magic becomes available to you 🪄

So why does this matter to you, Practical Person? In my very first post, I wrote how I believe magic is a feeling, spread in small bits across our day to day lives. However, I think many of us (including myself in this!) choose to deny The Universe and say no to Magic everyday.

Sometimes it's for practicality. There's not always time to stop and admire the flowers🪻

But sometimes it's out of blindness to The Universe. Sometimes we don't even notice the flowers

Live with your hand extended to The Universe, sometimes flowers grow towards your hand🌱🌌
