🎹🎸 **UNDERGROUND — Ben Folds Five (Cover)**

One of the most iconic bass lines of the ‘90s, courtesy of the legendary Robert Sledge. Had to bust out the Fender Jazz Bass and the Pork & Pickle for this one!

John Guari absolutely crushing the lead vocals while I attempt to play that bass line AND sing harmonies without completely losing my mind. 🤣

We may have gotten a little too into this one.

“Golden” — Jill Scott ✨

Live at @thecamdensocial in North Minneapolis. I love how this one starts so gently and gradually settles into the groove…which gave me plenty of room to get a little funky on the bass by the end 😎🎸

How do you keep the gig? 🎸
I asked Amos Heller—Taylor Swift’s longtime bassist—what might be the most important question a working musician can ask. His answer: “I never stop auditioning.”
Every rehearsal. Every show. Every time the instrument is on your shoulders. I loved this answer because it goes way beyond playing the right notes. Preparation, attitude, adaptability, being someone people actually want to work and travel with—it all matters.

This is a clip from my full conversation with Amos for Ethan’s Bass World. And yes…the full interview is coming. 👀
What do YOU think is the most important part of keeping a gig?

Geddy Lee. THE BIG MONEY. That bass line. 🤯

I will defend Rush’s Power Windows until the day I die, and THIS is one of the reasons why.

The bass playing on this record is absolutely ridiculous. The ghost notes, the funky articulation, the chromatic runs, the rhythmic variations... Geddy was doing some seriously nasty stuff in 1985.

Here’s a little performance of “The Big Money” using my Fender Jazz Bass with Bartolini B-Axis pickups.

And because apparently I can’t just enjoy a Rush song without turning it into a project, I made a full bass tutorial breaking down how to play it!😂

Full video available now on Ethan’s Bass World (YouTube). Link in bio!

Should I do every song on Power Windows?

WATCH YOUR STEP! 🔥🎸

A little taste of LA Buckner & BiG HOMiE bringing the FUNK to the Dakota in Minneapolis!

This tune is especially cool because our studio recording features the incredible Grammy Award-winning Cory Henry on keys. 🎹

I’m holding down the low end on my modified Sire V7 5-string, and getting to play music like this with these musicians is always a blast.

“Watch Your Step” is available to stream NOW!

And if you want to watch the entire Dakota performance, head over to my YouTube channel, Ethan’s Bass World! Link in bio.

Geddy Lee was absolutely COOKING on Hemispheres. 🔥🎸

Here’s a minute of me attempting one of my favorite sections from
“Cygnus X-1 Book II: Hemispheres” by Rush.

The deeper I’ve gotten into Rush, the more I appreciate just how
ridiculous Geddy’s bass playing is — not only technically, but
rhythmically. Playing these lines along with Neil Peart is a WORKOUT.

Rush fans: what’s your favorite bass moment on Hemispheres?

Bass players: throw your pedalboard in the garbage. 🗑️🎸
Okay, maybe don’t actually do that. 😂

I plugged a cheap Yamaha bass with flatwounds into a little Fender Mustang guitar amp and started messing around with the built-in sounds.

And something happened that I wasn’t expecting:
The sounds started changing the way I played.

Different tones made me improvise differently. I started playing melodies and ideas I probably wouldn’t have played with my normal bass sound. At one point the amp apparently decided I needed to play D’Angelo. 😂

It reminded me that sometimes the best thing you can do as a musician is just experiment.

Use the wrong amp.
Try the weird sound.
Turn some knobs.
Play the cheap bass.

Sometimes being inspired matters more than having the “right” gear.

I finally ranked EVERY Rush studio album. 😬🥁🎸

After going through the entire Rush discography for Ethan’s Bass World, it was time to do the impossible: rank all 19 studio albums from least favorite to favorite.

And yes…there are some placements in here that Rush fans may have STRONG feelings about. 😂

This is just my personal ranking after taking the journey through all of these records — and I want to hear yours.

What’s your favorite Rush album? And which one am I completely wrong about?
