At the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) Annual Meeting in Grapevine, Texas, ETSU Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy faculty, staff, and a student made an impact on the national stage:
National recognitions:
• Dr. Katelyn Alexander was honored as an American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education (AJPE) Top Reviewer.
• Dr. KariLynn Dowling-McClay was recognized as Gatton’s Teacher of the Year.
• Former Gatton Academic Fellow Dr. Tyler Melton was recognized as a Teacher of the Year for the University of Tennessee Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Translational Science.
Student recognition:
P2 Elizabeth Harrington graduated from the national Community Pharmacy Student Scholars Program, an initiative of the Academia-Community Transformation (ACT) Pharmacy Collaborative that prepares future leaders in community pharmacy practice. Elizabeth completed the program under the mentorship of Dr. Jeffrey Gray and practice mentor Dr. Spencer Pinney.

Congratulations to Dr. Jessica Burchette and Dr. Alex Surbaugh on recent leadership development milestones through the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP).
Dr. Jessica Burchette was selected among 36 across the country for the AACP Academic Leadership Fellows Program in Cohort 23, a nationally recognized, year-long program that prepares emerging leaders in academic pharmacy through intensive leadership training, mentorship, networking, and collaboration with peers from colleges of pharmacy across the country. Our graduates impress.
Class of 2026 alumna Dr. Carolina Davis and Dr. Rick Hess, Professor of Pharmacy Practice, have published research in the Journal of the American Pharmacists Association (JAPhA) based on Davis's original research idea examining access to ambulatory care pharmacy services across Appalachia.
Their article, "Geographic Disparities in Board Certified Ambulatory Care Pharmacists in Appalachia," was recently published online and will be featured in JAPhA's upcoming special issue on Rural Health and Pharmacy, scheduled for release in early 
2027.
Congratulations to Drs. Davis and Hess on this outstanding scholarly achievement and their contribution to advancing rural health research.

On this episode of White Coat Radio, we’re joined by Dr. Kelly Covert, Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice at East Tennessee State University Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy. She precepts third- and fourth-year student pharmacists, as well as pharmacy residents, on an adult medicine rotation at Johnson City Medical Center (JCMC). Dr. Covert is the college's PGY2 Residency Program Director. In this episode she discusses a day in the life of her practice site at JCMC, as well as tips for rotations and pursuing a residency.

Congratulations to Dr. Emily Strickland on completing her PGY2 Ambulatory Care Residency at ETSU Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy! A graduation ceremony was held for her on Thursday night at the Carnegie Hotel.
Following graduation, Dr. Strickland will begin her next chapter as a Cardiology Ambulatory Care Pharmacist with Wellstar MCG Health in Augusta, Georgia.
We are proud of all she has accomplished and excited to see the impact she will make in cardiovascular care.

At the Topical Products Conference 2026 in Atlanta, Georgia, two students in Dr. Ashana Puri's lab earned national recognition for their innovative work in drug delivery science.

John Bellflower (P2), a student researcher in Dr. Ashana Puri's lab, presented his work on the early development of a topical drug delivery system for Raynaud's phenomenon. His research received the Innovative Transdermal Delivery Award for its contribution to topical and transdermal drug delivery research.

In addition, Anjali Chauhan, a Ph.D. student in Dr. Puri's lab, presented research on a novel microneedle-based delivery platform designed to administer multiple therapeutic agents for the treatment of fentanyl-xylazine overdose. Her work earned the Innovation in Mucosal Drug Delivery Award for advancing strategies in rapid and sustained drug delivery.

Congratulations to John, Anjali, and their mentor, Dr. Ashana Puri, on these outstanding achievements and for representing Gatton's research excellence on a national stage.

Dean Byrd is celebrating her 10th anniversary as dean of Gatton this year. In March, she was named a Distinguished Fellow of the Pharmacy Academy by the National Academies of Practice (NAP), a prestigious honor that recognizes excellence and leadership in interprofessional health care.

Congratulations to Drs. Siva Digavalli and Morteza Rasoulianboroujeni,  faculty in the Dept. of Pharmaceutical Sciences, on receiving $17,500 in ETSU Research Funding Program support for their innovative research aimed at improving treatment for patients with treatment-resistant schizophrenia. 
Their project seeks to develop a safer way to deliver clozapine, the most effective medication for treatment-resistant schizophrenia. 
We are proud to see Gatton faculty advancing innovative research with the potential to improve patient care and quality of life.
