Conservation is interdisciplinary!

One of the most frequent questions I get asked is “what did you study to work in conservation without a science degree?”

If you ever feel like you don’t belong in this space because your background is not in biology or ecology, this post is for you. <3

💌 Save this for when you need the reminder and share this with someone who’s looking for a path in conservation.

7 lessons from living on a wildlife reserve: wrapped 🐘🌿🐛🦒🌵🐒🐾🦏💚

I spent a year working at a wildlife research centre in Laikipia, Kenya. Here are some of my reflections on nature, wildlife, conservation, community, coexistence…:

1. We don’t need *new* systems; most of the time, traditional and culturally-informed agricultural systems are naturally regenerative.

2. Conservation isn’t about imposing western science; it’s about learning from those indigenous to the land. As much as conservation is about protecting nature, it is also about protecting the people who have been its stewards all along.

3. While natural competition is important, the most resilient ecosystems are built on cooperation. Mutualism is a reminder that everyone thrives when we help each other grow!

4. Conservation at the cost of co-existence is unsustainable for long-term success. Conservation requires adapting to unforeseen ripple effects and remembering that humans are part of the equation, too.

5. Coexistence is not about building fences; it relies on rebuilding relationships rooted in tradition and respect.

6. It’s not just about the Big Five. Every organism has value—we just need to change how we look at what’s growing around us.

7. Conservation is rarely just about nature, but it’s always about power. Conservation without community is just colonialism with good intentions.

Every learning is elaborated in a long-form reel, and you can now watch every episode on my page :)

I’d love to hear your thoughts! Is there anything that I missed? ⬇️

Truth #5 is what gives me hope :’) ➡️

[save this post for when you’re feeling stuck!]

As someone who found my way into conservation through storytelling & communications, I can’t emphasize enough…

How MANY ways there are to contribute to the environment…

You don’t have to choose between spending all your time in the field or all your time in the office…

There isn’t one linear path (I personally don’t have a Master’s)…

And your existing skills are your biggest asset!

And if you’re still not convinced…

Just start where you are :)

And remember that environmental work deserves to be valued just like any other job

If you’re curious about how to align your skills with the conservation field, I created a FREE quiz to help you uncover your climate career pathway! Just comment “QUIZ” to reveal your role, the link is also in my bio :) by @eugreenia

Who is conservation for if it doesn’t include people…?

From September 24 to 25, more than 60 Indigenous land defenders and activists from 14 countries across Africa, Asia, North America and Latin America came together for the first global gathering to decolonize conservation, hosted by @survivalinternational.

The gathering culminated in The Nairobi Declaration, where Indigenous representatives presented their shared demands directly to the international media.

This is part 2/3 of Reels dedicated to discussing the costs of conservation: Justice.

Friendly reminder: you’re never “just” one person; we’re all part of the collective, and systems change starts with cultural change 💚
