🤙 Hitting the classics hard with this one!

Bringing back the old-school tradition of performing concerti with the composer’s piano reduction 🎹 and I can’t think of anyone better to deliver those monumental orchestral sounds to life on piano than the great Timothy Hester 👀

I’ll also perform the concerto in its full orchestral version on October 20 with Dallas Chamber Symphony 🎻

And I always look forward to playing the Strauss Sonata and these two beautiful songs. ✨🌙

Boccherini + Piatti’s continuo on steroids 💪

I always wondered why Anner Bylsma’s recording of this sonata had different notes and rhythms than most others. Lucia Swarts, principal cellist of Netherlands Bach Society, answered that question for me (and so many others) when I learned this with her, endpinless and on gut strings. She shared this manuscript copy with me, rather than the more commonly performed first-edition version, which explained so many of Mr. Bylsma’s choices in his recordings ✨

I can’t prove now that this would have been a less “convincing” performance had I learned the piece entirely on my modern setup, 🤔 but I do know that the end result would have been quite different, and I’m grateful to have had this perspective early in the learning process.

It’s true that Piatti’s über-realized version of the continuo part adds an enormous amount of musical content, with far more notes in the final product coming from Piatti than from Boccherini. Yet the arrangement has grown on me as a completely different work than the original, as it creates an entirely different conversational dynamic within the sonata.

It was such a pleasure to perform this recital program in collaboration with @jeannehourez_piano at @sufablife @southwesternu in 📍Georgetown, TX. Thank you, Hai Zheng-Olefsky, for the invitation!! 🙏

Shostakovich’s tempo was bonkers & we love it!🫡

The composer recorded his cello sonata with Shafran in 1946, taking a more reserved tempo closer to most recordings I’ve heard in this passage.

13 years later, he recorded it again (this recording), this time with Rostropovich at a blazingly faster tempo, which also happened to coincide with a newly revised edition of the sonata at that same time.

So… what happened between 1946 and 1959? 👀

A change in Shostakovich’s conception of the piece? Pressure from the Zhdanov Doctrine or the death of Stalin? Or perhaps simply the influence of his collaborator? ❔❔❔

Who knows 🤷🏻‍♂️ But after several years away from this sonata, it was pretty wild to come back to it and try to chase and, dare I say, exceed Shostakovich’s later tempo ourselves. What better source material than the composer himself? 👍

Vivaldi’s ornaments or me making s**t up?😱

Trying to ornament spontaneously in concert is still pretty terrifying for me, especially while playing on super thick gut strings at a much lower tension than my usual “modern” setup… 🤯 plus no endpin, because apparently improvising doesn’t stress me out enough 😮‍💨

I try to keep three things in mind 🧠 1. What will enhance the phrasing? 2. How many notes can I fit without disturbing the pulse? 3. Does it actually sound good to me? 🤷🏻‍♂️

My process so far: I try a bunch of different ornaments in the practice room, but never decide exactly which ones I’ll end up performing. Then, in performance, I pray that my brain doesn’t freeze or trip over itself and that my intuition and situational awareness will decide in the moment.

Solo Bach has always been a particular challenge for me. My spontaneous choices have rarely felt as poignant as Bach’s own notated ornaments, so I mostly bail on those ones I’ve tried. With Geminiani, meanwhile, I have the opposite problem… I somehow end up doing all the ornaments I’ve workshopped turning a simple slow movement into a coloratura aria 😵‍💫

Vivaldi feels like something in between. And that’s what makes it so challenging. And so enchanting 🪄✨

How do you contribute something of your own while still making choices that Vivaldi himself might have been excited to hear? 🙋🏻‍♂️🤔

We’re looking forward to performing in Boston at the New England Conservatory this Saturday! Thank you to dear @cathychanfcpa for the invitation!

We’re grateful to have had the opportunity to give a play-through at an intimate house concert (in the spirit of Kammermusik!). Here are a few sneak peeks of our program, including excerpts from Mendelssohn’s Piano Trio No. 1 in D Minor and Arensky’s Piano Trio (also in D minor)!

Looking forward to reuniting in Houston with @triomagnoliana before we head to 📍Boston for the Foundation for Chinese Performing Arts ✈️

Some of music’s most touching moments are hidden deep within chamber works, and I’m grateful to play these cello melodies with my team. 🫠 This particular moment from Taipei, Taiwan last spring comes from the cathartic exhale of the Passacaille from Ravel’s Piano Trio. 😮‍💨

This etude combines challenging extended double stops with arpeggiated textures that demand both physical freedom and nuanced voice leading. Throughout the entire etude, the polyphony should progress naturally and expressively, despite the awkward left-hand extensions and arpeggiations.

Before studying this etude, the player should be comfortable executing left-hand extensions with balance and ease and have a solid understanding of voice leading and phrase structure. Scales in thirds & Starker’s left hand exercises are a great place to start!

Heifetz 2026 ~ the talent level of the young cellists at the institute was pretty incredible, and I was so honored to share these past three weeks with all eight of my students here at @heifetzmusic 🫠

Each of them would have played circles around me when I was their age 🫨, yet they are so humble and charismatic, and I can’t wait for all their very bright futures!

I’m sharing this on behalf of my wife who would much rather watch dog reels than post any of her own content on social media. David Popper’s Etude No. 22 is one of the more overtly musical etudes in the collection, but its elegance can be deceptive. The frequent shifts between hand frames require thoughtful coordination and structure to maintain fluency and musical freedom.
