Is EU law fit for purpose?

While speaking to academics last week at the Annual Conference of the Luxembourg Centre for European Law (LCEL), Ombudswoman Teresa Anjinho explained that while the principles underpinning EU law remain largely fit for purpose, their effectiveness depends on how they are applied in practice.

Her remarks focused on the importance of transparent, accountable, and fair administration, especially as the EU responds to urgency, complexity, and rapid technological change. She underlined that EU law must respect people’s rights, support good administration, and remain grounded in the interests of citizens.

Finally, she highlighted the need for clearer procedures, stronger record-keeping, and a public service culture that treats legality, transparency, and participation not as obstacles, but as essential safeguards of public trust. For EU citizens, this means an administration that is understandable, predictable, and open to scrutiny.

🇪🇺🎉Happy European Day of Languages!

Today we celebrate Europe’s rich linguistic and cultural diversity. Multiculturalism is a core value of the European Union, bringing people and cultures together.

The European Ombudsman supports multilingualism by working to reinforce the right of citizens to communicate and receive assistance from the EU institutions in their own language. Recommendations on the use of languages by the EU institutions are set out in the European Ombudsman’s practical guide. Link in bio.

Can a transparency framework built 25 years ago still deliver accountability in our new digital and AI-centered age?

The way the EU administration works has changed with digital and AI-assisted tools having transformed how decisions are made.

Today, decisions can be shaped through emails, text messages, data flows, and increasingly, AI-assisted tools.

At a seminar on transparency, Ombudswoman Anjinho explored what this digital era of governance means for the public’s right access to EU documents and concludes that the current transparency framework needs to be adapted to today’s technology and how decisions are actually taken. New rules should enshrine good governance and proactive transparency and have citizens’ right to information at their very centre.

Early this year, Ombudswoman Anjinho addressed the New Economy Forum’s ‘Forum Europa: Ideas to Strengthen the Union', emphasising transparency as a fundamental right.
