🚀 Would you travel to space if you could ? I would absolutely board a ship to the Moon tomorrow, if possible !

Sci-Fi fans rejoice, Children of Strife is yet another wonderful instalment in the Children of Time series, delivering the incredible level of clever and wild world building we’ve known to expect from Adrian.

If you’re not familiar with his work, the Children of Time series is a space opera saga, winner of the 2023 Hugo Award for Best Series. Children of Strife is the fourth and latest book in the series, focusing on a far future, exploring three different chronological ages that ever so slowly converge, artificial intelligence psychosis, unchecked ambition, and many other very human themes that lurk beneath the science fiction.

Children of Strife is a thought provoking read, which is common for Adrian’s works, and one that you have to give time and patience to. The concepts are complex, the world building extremely detailed, and the plot sometimes gives way to character development before coming back to grab your attention again. There’s some interesting lessons to be learned and this is a book that will give you as much as you give it.

I will never fail to be amazed at how Adrian manages to seamlessly weave together dark humour, futuristic ideas and concepts, humane characters, insanely detailed and vivid descriptions, whilst also keeping these far future concepts incredibly relevant and fresh.

🔥What authors do you think deserve to be talked about more ?

Today is the day the Scottish Isles series is complete! Huge congratulations to @authorsamanthayoung for yet another beautiful series that I hope everyone gets around to reading sooner rather than later!

Midnight Mooring is a small town, second chance romance between Cammie and Forde who are childhood friends (and he also happens to be her brother’s best friend, of course 🤭). We get so much history between these characters already which I found allowed for more depth to their romantic relationship and for the suspense element to have room to shine. I am on my knees for a man who does the work and takes the necessary steps to improve himself and Forde really is that guy! 😩 This book was brimming with yearning and it kept me on my toes as I was trying (and failing) to figure out some of the mystery elements. The series is wrapped up beautifully with all the extra epilogues and I can’t believe it’s all over already!

Extra brownie points from me as this series is written by a Sottish author! I had the pleasure of living there for a few years and it was absolutely incredible. I miss it and I do my best to visit several times a year, but I love that I can also do that by immersing myself in a book set there!

I’ve found Samantha’s books to be wildly underrated and I know I’m not alone in thinking that! If you’ve read and loved any of her books let me know in the comments 🫶🏻

🕸️ Are you afraid of spiders ? I most certainly have had my moments of letting out a loud shriek when encountering one 🫣

I find that YA is a difficult space to navigate as everyone has a different understanding of what period in time that encompasses and how the characters evolve. With Dreamweaving by @oosangoyomi, I was instantly transported to an age that I associate with my late teens, where I was the one balancing all my extra curricular activities, pressures from family, society, friends, the desire to achieve my goals and make my ever demanding family proud whilst also working out who I was as a person.

The events of the book take place in a dark academia setting as we follow the five main characters on their journey to uncover a mystery at their prestigious boarding school. I loved how unique and memorable each and every one of them were and the found family aspect of their friendship that gave me a wonderful sense of hope and belonging. The mindset they have at that stage in their lives is also well represented because they all were so sure in themselves but still had so much to learn. Deja specifically - girl, you came in super strong at the beginning and I struggled a little with connecting with you but we peeled all those layers in time and got a little cosier together.

I enjoyed the magical and mystery elements of the book but the story mainly focuses on issues of racism, privilege and prejudice, friendship, resilience and strength. I went through all the feelings reading this and the consistent pacing kept me turning page after page without being able to put the it down!

I absolutely need to get my hands on the second book in the series because Dreamweaving end on a cliffhanger and I can’t stand not knowing what comes next! If you love a YA coming of age, dark academia magical mystery, with a diverse and dynamic cast, found family and Black representation then this is a great pick!

Scorpion Deep by @paperfury is a profoundly emotional, deep-sea eldritch horror story that is atmospheric and devastating. It is an exploration of grief, friendship, love, survival, and loneliness, supported by vivid writing that held me captive all the way to that haunting ending.

I love when I can become fully immersed in a read, not just from how evocative the setting is, but also because of the emotional depth of the story. In Scorpion Deep I found myself experiencing a myriad of emotions and perspectives, often conflicting ones that lead to understanding why the characters behaved a certain way even if it was heartbreaking but, most importantly, it felt like I was deeply connected with the characters and their dynamics.

The author did not shy away from dark topics(especially for an YA read), gore and violence, there is toxicity and angst, but also beautiful prose and so much incredible art that comes along with this book. This was a unique read for me and one I will continue to think of for a long time still.

I let out a little scream when my email showed me that @authorsamanthayoung is sending me the Midnight Mooring PR package and I think that’s a totally appropriate reaction !

Midnight Mooring releases on the 29th of October and is the fourth (and final) instalment in the contemporary romantic suspense series, Scottish Isles. As you might have guessed, the series is based in Scotland and that makes me so happy because I miss living there and try to visit as often as possible, either in person or through a good book!

Now, I know some of you like micro tropes and I hear in Midnight Mooring he washes her hair 🫶🏻 And he also goes to therapy to be a better man ! 😮‍💨

🧖🏻‍♀️ Are there any micro tropes that will instantly make you read a book?

I’ve just finished reading the last of Sophie’s books that I hadn’t gotten around to last week and I am very excited to already have new material and a nice, seasonal treat at that !

I’m a huge fan of Sophie’s writing and her stories are equally heartfelt and spicy and I love getting caught up in them. Time to get cosy this weekend and give this one a read! ❄️

🌕 What powers do you wish you had if you were a witch ?

It’s been a while since I’ve picked up a historical fiction read but I’ve definitely been going through a lot of witch trial retellings recently. A Time of Witches is a perfect choice for this time of the year, offering atmospheric, compelling writing and a dual timeline that is expertly balanced. We follow Lilith in the present day and Sybil during England’s 1600s witch trials, both timelines exploring the search for one own’s power and voice.

The historical period is well researched and doesn’t shy away from the horrific and gruelling aspects of what it was like for women that didn’t conform to societal expectations and how that put them in a vulnerable and dangerous predicament. I felt helpless, claustrophobic and enraged reading Sybil’s story but I appreciated the parallel to Lilith’s timeline where the story had a gentler vibe, almost easing us out of the horrors of the past and exploring themes such as friendship and sisterhood, with a touch of romance for good measure! I love books that have animals as well so that was an extra treat! 🐈‍⬛

I found myself emotionally invested throughout, reading this in one sitting. To me, this was an exploration of the power of a woman’s voice - the one we always have within ourselves to withstand the trials we face, the power others try to take away from us, the power that links generations of women together through all different kinds of relationships and experiences. There is hope and strength in all of us.

If you like visiting real life locations from books, you can easily travel to Bury St Edmunds and immerse yourself in the story even more! Check out the last slide for the full blurb of the book.

⏳ Would you want a love that’s comfortable and safe or one that tears you apart and puts you back together even stronger than before?

I couldn’t even bring myself to pick just a single quote to feature because I highlighted this book like no other! Broken Rival was a story I didn’t know I 𝙣𝙚𝙚𝙙𝙚𝙙. It grabbed a hold of my mind, heart, and soul and didn’t let go even long after I finished reading. I went into it with a measure of curiosity and no expectations and got put through an emotional rollercoaster that I still haven’t recovered from. Maybe I need to read it again ..

Tessa gave us a dystopian love story with a contemporary feel, but also took us on a journey of self acceptance and growth, of hope and yearning. There’s tension galore, not everything is what it initially seems, and there were unexpected twists that definitely left me a little slack jawed! I enjoyed the writing, the main characters were complex and developed well throughout the events of the book, and I was a big fan of the dystopian and time travel elements that were detailed enough to add that scifi vibe but not too complex as to distract from the romance itself.

Kinda chic to spend your afternoon learning how to book bind! ♥️

I had the most amazing time with @dietcokegbi and @ambardriscoll in Brighton, meeting so many wonderful people and having @thebinderwholived teach us how to rebind our own book!

We had a choice between three amazing titles - Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, and Wuthering Heights - and I went for the latter! I must admit, it was tough picking the cover and end page design as all the options were so beautiful! 🫶🏻

A big round of applause for everyone who helped organise the event and did the tablescaping, it was sensational ! 👏🏼

🪡 What’s the most exciting book mail you’ve received recently ?

The day has arrived when I can add the absolutely stunning trad proof to my collection, thank you SO MUCH @gollancz ! 🖤

In case it’s not glaringly obvious, I am obsessed with The Blood Plagues, @anavrinjayauthor, and the amazing (and extremely unhinged) street team that I’m so happy to be a part of!

Pictured we have the indie copy which I believe is still in stock with @birchandspine 👀, the gorgeous @pageandwick Special Edition, and the newly arrived proof courtesy of @gollancz ! There is a stunning signed @waterstones exclusive copy available for preorder 🔥

Please ignore my abysmal editing skills, they’re certainly not my forte but I am branching out of my comfort zone here!

Happy Release Day to Bound to Ruin - the second book in The Cursed Grimoire Duet by @seberkeleyauthor !

After the cliffhanger that Bound to Burn finished on I was desperate to find out what happens next and thankfully @secondskybooks made my wish come true with an early eARC which I devoured !

The Cursed Grimoire is a dark why choose Romantasy series where the FMC, Astoria, runs a secret bookshop that dabbles in the sale of illegal and dangerous grimoires. She is aided in her business by the charming Lucas, who is a talented thief and one of our MMCs. Astoria harbours a dark past full of secrets that are coming back to haunt her, her former fiancée and first love, Valen, being one of them.

The trio encounter many obstacles and are faced with difficult decisions and demons from their past and must work together to save each other from dangerous curses, power hungry politicians, monsters and dark magic. There is a tangled web of romantic feelings to be explored at the same time and I was hooked on seeing where the story went !

I enjoyed getting more insight from Lucas and Valen’s POVs in the second book and felt like it was more character driven rather than the first one. There was tension, spice, chemistry and banter between the characters and I was on the edge of my seat at several points throughout my read!

If you like your fantasy romance on the darker side, a little filthy, with two MMCs, cursed grimoires, lots of tension and the fiercest and most loyal familiar then give this a go and let me know your thoughts !

𝙒𝙚𝙡𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙏𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙡𝙚𝙬𝙤𝙤𝙙, 𝙬𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙥𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙜𝙚 𝙖𝙡𝙬𝙖𝙮𝙨 𝙝𝙖𝙨 𝙖 𝙥𝙧𝙞𝙘𝙚...

I am so excited to be part of the @instabooktours Dreamweaving tour and that I was lucky enough to receive not only the proof copy from @yalc_uk but also an early finished copy from @rocktheboatnews ! They’re both stunning and I enjoyed spotting the subtle differences between the two !

Dreamweaving by @oosangoyomi is a pulse-pounding contemporary dark academia YA fantasy that interrogates themes of race and prejudice against the backdrop of an elite boarding school. The book draws inspiration from the authors’s real life experience of leaving the South to attend a prestigious university in the US, exploring the cultural shock of moving and the academic pressures put on children of immigrants.

Come back on the 26th of October for my review!
