Founder stories matter.

They create connection, meaning and often the reason consumers care in the first place, but as a brand grows, the founder cannot remain the only infrastructure holding it together.

The proposition has to become clear without explanation. The product has to perform. Operations have to work. Retail relationships have to mature. The team has to grow. The brand has to become bigger than the person who started it.

Story can create attention. Systems create scale.

Research isn't valuable because it always tells you to proceed. Sometimes it says the pricing needs work. The proposition isn't clear enough. The regulatory route will take longer. The retailer isn't right. The consumer needs more education.

Or the brand simply isn't ready for this market yet.

That's not failed strategy. That's strategy doing its job before the market does it for you.

Africa has long supplied one of the global beauty industry's most valuable ingredients: shea.

But supplying an ingredient and capturing its commercial value are two different things.

Across West Africa, restrictions on raw shea nut exports are intended to encourage more processing and value addition within producer countries. It's an important shift, particularly for an industry where so much of the manufacturing and commercial value has historically been created beyond the continent.

But the transition isn't without complications. Processing capacity cannot be built overnight, and women collectors and small-scale traders can find themselves carrying the immediate economic consequences when traditional export channels are disrupted.

For beauty brands, this is more than an ingredient-sourcing story. It raises questions about supply-chain resilience, local manufacturing, investment and who benefits from the ingredients on which global products depend.

The opportunity isn't simply to export less. It's to build the capacity to create and retain more value.

We spend a great deal of time discussing market penetration through pricing, distribution, product positioning and marketing budgets. All important, but sometimes what stands between a brand and meaningful consumer adoption is something less obvious.

It's the cultural nuances.

The way people speak about beauty. The meaning they attach to certain ingredients. Their shopping habits, the people whose opinions they value, and the subtle differences in how they respond to messaging.

These details may seem small when you're looking at a market from the outside. But to the consumer living in that market, they're part of everyday life.

And when brands overlook them, even a well-funded campaign can struggle to convert.

For us at Euphony Brands, this is why understanding a market goes beyond studying its size and commercial potential. We want to understand the people who make that market what it is.

Sometimes the missing ingredient isn't a bigger marketing budget. It's a deeper understanding of the consumer.

Beauty tech is moving beyond virtual try-on.

AI is entering discovery, recommendations, formulation, diagnostics, content and commerce. L'Oréal's 2026 technology programme alone has included AI-powered beauty conversations, hair diagnostics and computational approaches to formulation.

For African markets, the opportunity is exciting, but so is the question.

As beauty becomes more personalised, does the technology understand the diversity of the people it's personalising for?

That is where innovation becomes market relevance.

When brands map their competition, they usually start with the obvious: who sells a similar product, at a similar price, to a similar consumer?

That's important. But it doesn't always tell you what you're really competing against.

A new skincare product may be competing with a routine the consumer already trusts. A haircare brand may be competing with the recommendation of a stylist. A supplement may be competing with an established wellness habit. And sometimes the biggest competitor is simply the consumer deciding that she doesn't need another product at all.

This is why competitor analysis should go beyond the shelf. Understanding the market means understanding what already occupies the space you're asking your brand to enter - in the consumer's routine, budget and mind.

Before asking “Who are our competitors?”, there may be a better question:
“What would the consumer have to change, replace or believe differently to choose us?”

That answer can tell you far more about the strategy you need to build.

Clicks increasing its stake in ARC to 61% is more than a retail transaction. It's an interesting signal about where South African beauty retail is moving.

ARC has built its position around prestige beauty, while Clicks brings scale, infrastructure and a substantial national retail ecosystem. With ARC planning to grow from 12 stores to between 20 and 30 over the medium term, we're particularly interested in what happens next.

For brands looking at South Africa, retail consolidation and expansion matter. The question isn't only who stocks beauty? It's increasingly: who controls discovery, experience and access to the consumer?

A retail listing can feel like the finish line. It isn't.

Once the product reaches the shelf, another set of questions begins. Does the consumer understand it? Can the retail team explain it? Is there enough awareness to create demand? Is stock moving? What are consumers asking? What is the retailer learning?

The strongest brand-retailer relationships shouldn't only negotiate space. They should exchange intelligence.

Because the objective isn't simply to get onto the shelf. It's to give the product a reason to stay there.

One of the more interesting African beauty retail developments we're watching: Thirteen Lune has chosen South Africa for its first international expansion, entering through an exclusive partnership with Takealot. The Q4 rollout is expected to begin digitally before extending into local activations and pop-ups.

What interests us isn't simply another international beauty player arriving in South Africa.
It's the route to market.

Digital discovery provides reach and data without immediately requiring a large physical footprint. The planned experiential layer can then give consumers opportunities to encounter unfamiliar brands beyond the screen.

For brands thinking about African expansion, the question is increasingly not simply “Which market do we enter?”

It's also “Which channel should earn the right to go first?”

Some brands come to us because they're trying to understand South Africa before entering it.

Others are already here but need to build stronger retail performance, consumer relevance or market demand.

And increasingly, we're interested in the reverse journey too: helping ambitious African-founded brands build beyond their home markets and compete internationally without losing what makes them distinctive.

Different destinations require different strategies.

That's why our work can span market research, positioning, route-to-market thinking, retail, education, influence, activation and growth strategy.

Where are you going next?

Growth can look very exciting from the outside.

New country. New retailer. New distributor. New announcement.

But expansion also introduces new logistics, regulations, pricing realities, partners, consumer behaviours and operating costs.

Sometimes the smartest growth strategy isn't to enter five markets. It's to enter one, learn, strengthen the model and take those lessons into the next.

Scale isn't only speed. It's the ability to grow without losing the business underneath it.

Follower count is easy to see.

Influence is harder to measure.

Who trusts this person? What does their audience come to them for? Do they have authority in the category? Does their community listen, ask questions, save recommendations and act on them?

Sometimes the right person has 10,000 followers. Sometimes they have 500,000.

Start with relevance. Then evaluate reach.
