How do I know if a car has been repainted?

303 MICRONS🤯 That got my attention…

When they said the car was never repainted, but then I saw these numbers: 220-303µm 🔍

To understand the car body condition, I look at the combination of paint texture & thickness, colour match, panel gaps, body lines, previous repairs…

A paint thickness gauge won’t tell me the whole story, but it tells me where I should look closer.
For example:

ℹ️ Factory Mercedes-Benz paint typically measures between 115-150 µm for vertical panels & 160-180 µm is a common number for horizontal panels.

This meter is just a beginning of my investigation.

The detective work starts after that.🕵️‍♀️

It’s getting dark earlier.
Maybe your headlights deserve a little attention too. 👀

Cloudy, yellow, hazy headlights can make a car look tired. And they definitely don’t help when you’re driving after dark.

Before you start thinking about replacing the whole headlight assembly, check if restoration is an option.

Nobody would ever see it. And I knew it was there.

While wrapping this Lexus spoiler, I made a tiny cut in the vinyl on the top side, right on the edge.
It was an area that would never be visible, and the customer would probably never see it.

But I knew it was there.
And once I know something isn’t right, it’s hard to just leave it like this. 😅

So I pulled the vinyl off and did it again.

Yup, it was a waste.
No, I don’t regret it.

Quality. Reputation. Customer satisfaction. Reliability. Standards.

Not just words for me, they’re my credo, my mantra, my standard.

That’s one of those little things that may never make it into the final reveal, but it’s part of how I work.

If it’s not right, I redo it. Even when nobody will ever see it.

55 layers of Ceramic Coating🤔

There is something every customer should know before paying for Ceramic Coating.

Not all coatings are designed the same way. Some are 1-layer systems. Some allow 2 or 3. Some use a base coat + a dedicated top coat. And there are even systems designed around 4.

I’m not saying every coating stops at 2 layers.

I’m stating this:
❗️The number of layers should come from the chemistry and the manufacturer’s system, not the sales pitch.

A Ceramic Coating isn’t paint. Once the first layer cures, the next one is being applied to an already cured, extremely smooth and hydrophobic surface.

As more material is added, it’s harder to spread, level and bond properly. This leads to poor leveling, high spots, streaks and uneven film.

That’s why manufacturers specify how many layers their product is designed for and how much time should be left between applications.

🧐You probably don’t know those specifications.

So someone can tell you: “We’re giving you 5 layers!”
Sounds impressive.
But what if the coating is actually designed for 1 or 2?

You could be paying for a bigger number (and significantly more product) without getting more meaningful protection.

So before paying for “5 layers,” “7 layers,” or whatever impressive number is being advertised, ask:

❓Which coating?
❓What does the manufacturer recommend?
❓How many layers is this product designed for?
⁉️What does each additional layer actually add?

Because the real question isn’t: “How many layers am I getting?”

It’s: “Am I paying for a number or for a properly installed coating system?”

Don’t get sold the number. Understand what you’re paying for.

More ≠ automatically better. 🖤
