Trick question. I can tell you exactly when. It was when yoga became so damn trendy, every influencer was doing it, every one was taking photos in more or less poorly executed yoga poses.

And then, everyone did a yoga teacher training. Two weeks in India, Bali, wherever else was hot and boom you’re unleashed onto society as a “200h international yoga alliance certified teacher”. Previous movement background? Not required. Anatomical knowledge? The very basics will do. Biomechanics? We don’t know her.

That’s when yoga got diluted from a niche interest that a few people were practicing with people who had devoted lifetimes to it to something suddenly everyone was “qualified” to “teach”. So many of the in person classes in Berlin (where mediocrity is celebrates if you look “cool”) especially became senseless assortments of random poses, insufficient cues and no transitions, weird preachy spiritual nonsense all tied together with an incense, an Om and a Namaste at the end, uttered with almost comical gravitas.

That’s when I stopped going to in person classes and started practicing exclusively online with people whose deep understanding of human bodies I had always admired. (Shout out to @kaylalanielsen and @meghancurrieyoga

Now Yoga is out of style and with it body positivity (was that ever real?). Now we do “Pilates” and GLP1s. And I fear Pilates is going to suffer the same fate. When too many people jump on a trend, the essence is lost. Teacher trainings become substance less cash grabs and every influencer is now a Pilates teacher forcing their course down your throat and pushing teachers with less of a following but years of experience and a deep cognitive but also embodied understanding of their teaching out of your field of vision.
