“My Homeland Doesn’t Resemble”
I thought the only way to describe how much I loved this poem is to write my version of it. I usually read the whole text/poem then start translating it, but it wasn’t the case for this one. I started translating automatically by each line I read… until I got to the last part where I cried rivers. Such a beautiful verse…

[ES] Hoy nos honra compartir la poesía de Eva Abu Mariam, estudiante de odontología, escritora, poeta y activista comunitaria de Gaza. Su trabajo ha sido publicado en diversas plataformas y medios, y recientemente vio la luz su zine de poesía Last Eve in Gaza.
En esta ocasión, compartimos la traducción del poema que da título a la colección, una voz que entrelaza identidad, memoria y resistencia desde la experiencia encarnada de vivir en Gaza. Gracias, Eva, por confiar en este espacio y por hacer presente tu voz entre nosotras.

[EN] Today we are honored to share the poetry of Eva Abu Mariam, a dentistry student, writer, poet, and community activist from Gaza. Her work has been published on various platforms and outlets, and her poetry zine Last Eve in Gaza was recently released.

On this occasion, we share the translation of the poem that gives the collection its title: a voice that weaves together identity, memory, and resistance from the experience of living in Gaza.
Thank you, Eva, for trusting this space and for making your voice present here.

Poem in English:

Last Eve In Gaza

The letters were disappointed,
They sounded clumsy, disjointed.
I hated my own stubbornness,
I struck a deal with bitterness:
Stubborn letters I call,
Trembling of a fragile soul.

I gaze into my eyes,
I see tears and cries.
My tears look back,
They see strength they lack.
I strike another deal:
Those dignified eyes
Witnessing no lies, A soul that's tired,
No breeze respired.

"I am Eve"
My lost identity whispers.
I search my pockets,
Find nothing but twisters,
And a green card,
Saying "Palestinian".
In front of me,
A soldier, tyrannian,
With an eager dog,
Asks for my identity.
Fighting the fog,
Reality punches me:
"I am Eve"
I say with certainty
"The one who ate the apple,
Became Gazan,

Meet Coastal Lines Press writer Eva Abu Mariam, a 20-year-old young woman from Gaza studying dentistry at Al-Azhar University, Gaza. She writes her stories and poems so they may outlive time on the pages of history. Her work has appeared in We Are Not Numbers and Impulse magazine and was translated into French in the book “غزة تروي إبادتها”, published by the Institute for Palestine Studies. She is an Illuminated Cities’ 2025 Poetry of the Camps–Gaza fellow, and a member of the literary team “Yarrat” at the Tamer Institute for Community Education.

Besides being a writer, Eva is a member of the Social Development Forum (SDF), and a big participant in community work with the NGOs working in the field of Gaza.

المخيلة المحاصرة: كيف ينجو الخيال؟

في زمنٍ انتُهكت فيه حدود العقل الإنساني بفعل الإبادة الصارخ، تقطَّعت طُرُق ولوج المشاعر إلى الخيال. فُرِضَت حواجز تفتيش داخل الوعي، تُفَتِّش عن كل ذاكرةٍ لمكان، أمان، سكينة… لتقطع طريقهم قبل أن تُجَسِّدهم المُخيلة.

سترى الحزن، واليأس، والغضب، والألم… سترى عساكرَ الحواجزِ تُفسِح لهم الطريق، ويُبسط لهم السجاد الأسود، ليسيروا إلى الوعي، ويُكسى ما تبقى من زوايا ربيعه بالسواد.

لقد هتكت الإبادة حدود وعي الإنسان وإدراكه، واجتاحت بكل آلات الطمس والتنكيل عقله وحدود مُخيلته، فصار أصعب تحدٍّ على الكاتب الجاثم تحت سوط الجلاد أن يستحضر مُخيلته التي اعتاد استحضارها، وأن يستشعر مشاعره، ويرى انعكاساتها كما اعتاد… على الورق.

نستضيف في هذه الحوارية، الكاتبة الفلسطينية أحلام بشارات، لنفتح بابًا، للحديث عن أثر الإبادة في خيال الكاتب، وما تكتبه الذاكرة حين تُمنع عن الحلم، ولنفكّر في سُبل تفكيك جمود المخيلة من خلال الكتابة الإبداعية.
