Coming up soon! October 11-25, “The Ceramic Surface: finding your voice through technique improvisation and design.”

We’re excited to welcome EVA CHAMPAGNE @evalyschampagne back to Monte Castello for a two-week intensive exploration of the expressive potential of the ceramic surface. Through experimentation with composition, mark-making, texture, color, and layering, participants will investigate just how much can be communicated through ceramic materials—and how deeply surface can carry meaning. The techniques are intentionally low-tech and adaptable to any clay, firing temperature, or studio setting, allowing the focus to remain on creative vision rather than specialized equipment. With demonstrations, thought-provoking prompts, discussion, and individual mentoring woven throughout, the workshop offers a sustained period of discovery and reflection that can expand the way you approach pottery, sculpture, or even painting. A chance to slow down, dig deeper, and discover new ways of bringing what you imagine into material form. If you consider yourself primarily a 2-D artist or a potter, there is gold here for everyone.

Our workshops are All-Inclusive: participants stay in our well-restored 18th century convent, enjoy chef-prepared meals daily, have 24 hours a day studio access, venture out on two excursions around Umbria, and of course get to know our charming and friendly village of Monte Castello di Vibio.

Please Elaborate: An Exploration of the Ceramic Surface

Curated by Eva Champagne. Exhibition Dates: October 2-31, 2026

This exhibition invites ceramic artists whose work begins with function or references it, while extending beyond utility as a fixed outcome. We seek objects where form and implied use establish an entry point, and surface treatment carries substantial conceptual weight. Guest curator Eva Champagne has included three Montana based artists in this exhibition, and is inviting submissions that will both complement and contrast the works of these invited artists: George Metropoulos McCauley, Kelly Stevenson and Sue Tirrell.

Submissions from prospective artists should demonstrate intentional, thoughtful surface handling that adds narrative, depth, and meaning through material, technique, and composition—well beyond decoration or embellishment.

Hey party people don’t eat the mushrooms, these are not chicken-of-the-woods, alas, but their near-identical, non-edible cousins.
Anyway, if you’re thinking of scooping up a new piece of pottery from me, and hope to get it before November, please visit my website by end of day tomorrow? Still a few beauties left.
Next week I depart for 3 weeks or so in Italy @montecastelloacademy. So, I’m wrapping things up here, preparing for the pet sitter, packing pots (thank you SO MUCH to you gorgeous people who have already purchased!), prepping the garden for winter (we had our first frost last night), framing works on paper for an upcoming show 😃😃😃, and fine-tuning some never-before offered projects for the workshop in Italy. #lifeisbutadream

New pots on the Swan! This is my chance to scatter some beauty out into the world before leaving for Italy… I don’t imagine I’ll get another firing in before the end of the year, alas, so my friends, please take this opportunity to have a little look-see. Tomorrow morning at 6 pacific time things will be available. (Thursday September 24) And why yes I did check the stars and signs before deciding that date. So show me a sign that I’m doing a thing or two worthwhile, and meet me on my website. I’m thinking the window of availability is only a few days since I have to pack and ship and also pack for my trip, etc etc etc.
If you are outside the US don’t sweat it I’ll ship internationally. If we need to add a little to the shipping cost I’ll let you know.
This is me, loving you. May you go with the flow like this beautiful wild river I am so blessed to live on.

It’s a glorious day, and the beginning of autumn. When a zoom meeting got canceled this morning I made the best use of the time and got outside!

I used to love the old #mugshotmonday days… my feed would be filled with pottery, just good wholesome creativity and sharing.

Here’s a new mug (side A), and i want to say that in a few days I’ll release this and quite a few new pieces on my website, for a limited time— just a few days. I don’t love repeating about this but of course i have to. For one thing, I’m probably not going to be able to do another release until next year! So, this is it for 2026.

This is the other side of the same mug. I leave for Italy October 1. Pots will be available for perhaps less than a week, so i can ship as i head out. I’ll be gone until the end of the month and don’t expect to be able to fire any new work before the holidays.

So, please remember to check the website after 6 am Pacific time, Thursday September 24. Meanwhile I’ll be leaving previews in my stories and maybe on the grid.

Oh how I enjoyed this run of surface play… I only wish I’d been able to make time for more.

It’s lovely seeing this cone 6 oxidation work come together. Of course I longgggg for soda firing, but I continue to adapt with every firing. Builds character, right?

And speaking of soda…. The final firing of my beloved BaliCat soda kiln at Gaya has just been unloaded. The end of a beautiful era that began as a hopeful and thrilling idea in 2013… But— as they say, “if you can’t be with the one you love, love the one you’re with.” Kind of cynical for relationships but perhaps sage advice when it comes to kilns.

I’ll be releasing new work on my website at 6am Pacific time, Thursday, September 24.

You know when you’re exhausted but also feeling so amazing at the same time? That’s me today.

I have been doing surface work for dayzzzzz and evenings. Possibilities overflow my mind, and I go on hypothetical adventures until I simply pick one option, and then the next, and the next.

Feeling fully alive, completely absorbed and present.

Because when I’m not, there’s doubt and judgment. I’m outside the moment, wondering if what I’m doing is valid or a waste of time, or whether other people will like the results. Enjoyment, immersion, timelessness are lost, and the thing becomes a product, not an experience. Which is ok, but not for this thing, or for me, in this moment.

Sometimes I wish I could make work that looked more polished. Or more loose. Elegant or sophisticated. Or more whatever is desirable to others. And I imagine no one else ever feels the same.

But then I spend days on end doing this, and I feel that timelessness and elation in the process, that satisfaction at the end of the day, and I know.

You have to be yourself.

All this is to say, I’m loading a kiln on Friday and releasing some new work on September 24th. There is so much authentic pleasure in this work, and I have only a little idea how these pieces will turn out, as usual.

And I’m really enjoying making them…

These two get paid in carrots and apple treats but that doesn’t make them great at modeling. You get what you pay for I guess. I love them anyway.
