Yesterday it was beautiful and meaningful. We started our day with some of the main tourist attractions of Barcelona and we crowned our journey with a wonderful learning session about local Jewish history and Sukkot at Casa Adret. Finally we welcomed Shabat at Comunitat Atid with the first Spanish woman rabbi in history my dear rabbi Irene. by @evamcgowan

$I haven't picked up the guitar since I fractured my elbow in February. But really, it hasn't been since my last gig. Which before that wasn't since having kids. But when I really think about it, hasn't been since Bob passed... I think it's time to pick up again, warts and all. Need to change guitar strings and get a haircut. by @evamcgowan$

T’hi apuntes?

On Yom HaShoah, we remember the victims of the Holocaust. We also remember the spaces, the stories, the documents, and the cultures lost in this dark chapter.

Here stands the ghost of the Great Choral Synagogue of Drohobych, captured in 2009, when it lay in ruins. Once part of Galicia under the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Drohobycz was a vibrant, multi-cultural town where around one third of the population was Jewish. It was a place of intellectual and artistic life, home to figures such as Bruno Schulz and Ephraim Moses Lilien.

It also holds the web of my own ancestry. Only two sisters from my family survived the round ups of Jews, taken to be executed in the forests or to nearby deathcamp, Belzec. Living under false identities, they somehow endured, and eventually made their way to Australia. Looking at this extraordinary building, rising four stories high, it was once full of life. My great-grandfather was a cantor within its walls.

Like so many towns across Eastern Europe, this world was almost entirely destroyed during the Holocaust, its people murdered, its culture silenced, its spaces left in ruin.

In our current world, troubled and divided, may we choose compassion over hatred, and strive to face these complex truths with openness, and humanity.

Student visit from the Universitat Pompeu Fabra de Barcelona. It was a real pleasure to take part in this year’s international program on Medieval Jewish studies and share this learning experience together.

It's been a while... full hands and full hearts with the little ones... most of my songs are about dinosaurs now. Thank you @lutebarsants for the invitation to play this S U N D A Y (Lute Bar, Sants). I love this bar. It's going to be a true pleasure to bring out the Gibbo and take her for a stroll 💞
